What is this fair use you speak of?

You know YouTube’s copyright takedowns are bad when newly released games start to include the following option:

copyright

I never thought I’d see the day when a game (and possibly more to come) would basically kneel before Google and the music industry to prevent potential copyright takedowns to those who may choose to show off their gameplay. We have fair use laws and Google lets these bigger industries trample all over them day in and day out. Things like this won’t fix the problems, it’ll only feed them.

I want someone to create a website for generic music, and the music on the site would consist of copyrighted songs being played by other musicians backwards with different lyrics JUST to piss off the big bad music industry. Naturally they should start with Metallica’s songs, it would be such poetic justice. :v

The Terms of Service for the Oculus Rift are Facebook creepy… because Facebook

Hate to say it, but I saw this coming.

That’s a little too big brother-ish for my taste. I knew from the moment Facebook invested in the Rift I would lose what little interest I already had in the project. I say that I have little interest because VR is too new. I can say that I have little interest in other VR Projects as well, including Steam’s HTC Vive. But Oculus gets a big fuck no from me because of Facebook’s creepy uncle mentality.

As if I’m going to spend hundreds of dollars so I can have Facebook potentially watch my every move and try to sell me shit I probably don’t want. Why would anyone be ok with this? This is right up there with Microsoft’s telemetry BS and Google’s over the top data collection. I don’t see how people can be so open about their privacy and act as though nothing can go wrong because ‘they have nothing to hide’. Sorry, I’m a privacy advocate and shall remain as such. My computer and devices are like my house and house internals. I don’t want people snooping around in there unless I give them my permission.

How the internet corrupted an AI

p4NtiY8

Apparently while I was minding my own business today Microsoft released an AI on twitter targeted at teens, young adults etc as an experiment. After not even a full 24 hours they had to shut the bot down after it became a racist, sexist asshat. The last thing it uttered was:

yishkd9shm75aygh6klk

There are many more examples that you can find here, here and here.

I can’t fault Microsoft for this, after all this was an experiment. An experiment that shows how corrupt asshats can corrupt a machine. Brought upon by racists, sexists and anything else you could think of. I also find it interesting that you don’t really see much from the other side of the spectrum. The bot had plenty of love of Trump, Hitler, Gamergate etc but nothing much about teh ebil feminists, Hillary, gay pride etc. I mean, they say feminists and gay people are ruining our world, you’d think they would have control of Microsoft’s chatbot within seconds! 😛

Stupid asshat of the day

Sending someone your nudes doesn’t seem like the best way to test someones eyesight while you’re working on getting their glasses fixed.

While the woman was waiting for her glasses to be fixed, she received a text message containing an image of a nude, fully aroused man. A short time later, a second text arrived, with the message, “Did you like that?”

Genius… This is right up there with these subway guys who froze their urine and put their privates between some subway bread. How do these wanks think they’ll keep their jobs after doing this shit? If they even do…

Because when you think of GDC, you think of erotic schoolgirl dancers.

microsoftdancer

Microsoft’s timing couldn’t be better. 😛

Hours after hosting a “women in gaming” luncheon at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft threw a party with scantily clad dancers in school girl outfits. It wasn’t a good look, and the company has since apologized.

Of course they did pull out Phil Spencer Bot to offer up apologies about the whole thing. Because he’s done a great job so far keeping up the company image. I always love reading his stuff. In fact, lets embark on this journey together. 😀

How we show up as an organization is incredibly important to me.

Yes, and your company’s message has been loud and clear… Annoy the fuck out of people to use your new products.

We want to build and reflect the culture of TEAM XBOX – internally and externally – a culture that each one of us can represent with pride. An inclusive culture has a direct impact on the products and services we deliver and the perception consumers have of the Xbox brand and our company, as a whole.

Inclusive, we want everyone to flock to our walled garden. That includes you, ladies.

It has come to my attention that at Xbox-hosted events at GDC this past week, we represented Xbox and Microsoft in a way that was absolutely not consistent or aligned to our values. That was unequivocally wrong and will not be tolerated.

We’ll remember to buy male dancers next time… in tiny miniskirts!

This matter is being handled internally, but let me be very clear – how we represent ourselves as individuals, who we hire and partner with and how we engage with others is a direct reflection of our brand and what we stand for.

If they were trying to reflect the Microsoft brand I’d say Mission Accomplished. Having read many posts by all kinds of virgin man children gamers from all corners of the internet I’d say you know your target audience quite well! Hell, a small portion of said audience seems to think you’re doing a great job.

When we do the opposite, and create an environment that alienates or offends any group, we justly deserve the criticism.

Your money is important to us too. All inclusive!

It’s unfortunate that such events could take place in a week where we worked so hard to engage the many different gaming communities in the exact opposite way. I am personally committed to ensuring that diversity and inclusion is central to our everyday business and our core values as a team – inside and outside the company. We need to hold ourselves to higher standards and we will do better in the future.

Yes, higher standards. Like making sure Windows 10 gets put on as many computers as possible with or without your consent.

You know. I don’t think this would have been as big if they had regular dancers and maybe included some male ones too… But that would probably creep out the guys at the conference, and we can’t have that… can we?

How to prove you didn’t steal anything: Flash the security guards and bite them

People do strange things when they’re caught being stupid.

When the store’s loss prevention staff accused her of theft and pulling her clothes partway off didn’t convince them otherwise, she resorted to violence. According to police, she hit one of the employees trying to detain her in the face, then bit his arm. She left “visible injuries” in the attack, but nothing bad enough that the employee needed medical attention.

Dumb people do even dumber things when they get caught. I’ve seen tweakers around this area do similar things, but not quite that grotesque.

Raiders Of The Lost Wal-Mart Presents: WebTV

Hey, remember WebTV from over a decade ago? It was Microsoft’s attempt at trying to get old people who were afraid of owning a computer to access the internet to, well… Access the internet! Pepperidge Farm doesn’t remember, but Wal-Mart sure does. They’re still selling the old thing despite the fact that Microsoft hasn’t supported it in ten years, thus making the Zune more useful by comparison. This whole time the WebTV has been $200 at Wal-Mart. But the good news is if you want to own this historical treasure they knocked the price down a bit!

An entire two cents worth! What a bargain!

Speaking of two cents worth here’s mine: It’s pretty sad that some corporate know it all sees more value in an ancient piece of technology than one of their actual workers…

Thoughts on the latest shooting.

The whole shooting at the Umpqua Community College has been all kinds of depressing. The guy behind the shooting announced his plans on 4chan of all places, and while there were some people in the thread telling him not to do it, he was still cheered on for starting the “beta uprising”. Having read what I could of the archive before projectile vomiting I could see he couldn’t score with someone of the opposite sex. What fascinates me is the people in that thread giving their undying support, I know it shouldn’t surprise me since misery loves company and everything, but damn that’s a heaping load of misery…

But you can’t point at one thing in these cases and place blame, A lot goes into this mental behavior. Mental health care in the United States has been poor since the 1980’s, people with mental issues have problems getting the proper care they need, but they have no issues getting their hands on guns to commit these crimes. They also find people just as crazy as they are and have crazy children, then impart their mental teachings. Technology has advanced tremendously, and has made it easy for people to connect with each other, including crazies finding other crazies to enjoy each others company in their own echochambers. They become so comfortable talking like this all the time that they act out in the real world thinking they won’t get in trouble. I’ve seen guys and even some girls that fit the mold.

You know, some people say that the government is trying to control our population by using chemtrails and other means of sterilization. But that seems rather pointless when we appear to be doing a bang up job trying to kill each other.

Just when I switch to FireFox I find this out…

So this isn’t looking very good for FireFox users…

Mozilla has announced a new Extension API for Firefox browser called ‘WebExtensions‘ that is compatible with API used by Blink-based Chrome and Opera browsers, and they want to deprecate current Firefox XPCOM/XUL/XBL APIs from 12 or 18 months from now.

I’m hoping Seamonkey gets fixed before this happens, or that the developers get the more important plugins like NoScript working under the new FireFox. I don’t see why they’re doing this, the one saving grace of FireFox is the giant library of addons you can choose from. And now they’re going to try and be more like Opera and Google Chrome? There’s a reason why people use FireFox and Seamonkey, and that’s to not use Opera and Google Chrome. I’m not the only one with a gripe about this either.

I’m all for change and everything, but this is like the changes that have been done recently to Windows 10, or someones favorite Linux distribution, unnecessary and annoying.

Siri is such a prankster

If you tell Siri to charge your phone 100% she’ll dial 911. O_o

While this sounds like a far-fetched scenario, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility. Earlier this year, for example, a woman used Pizza Hut’s app to alert the police that she and her children were being held hostage by a boyfriend with a knife. Asking a kidnapper if you can charge your phone with some weird passphrase is pretty innocuous by comparison. However, there’s no official mention from Apple of this “function,” and the only evidence of its use online is a scattering of tweets going back to early July of teens trying to prank one another with it. At least that’s a believable use case.

Oh I see… It’s a safety word, and unlike S&M it sends cops to your location. I think Apple needs to rethink their code words.
