So far I’ve mostly relaxed (aside from doing my usual work around the house), been really getting more into the Yakuza series. I’ve been bouncing back and forth between Yakuza 0 and Kiwami. Sega really knows how to make a fun beat em up game with a serious tone, and not so serious minigames. I have to admit I’ve spent quite a bit of time playing in the Sega Cafe. and did a bit more pool this evening, that and actually advance the plot. Kiryu needs to buy booze for some homeless people to learn some vital information.
Of course I’ve also made time for some multiplayer shenanigans. Yutram and I battled our way through a Serious Sam Halloween, and then we advanced further in Resident Evil 6. We would have played tonight, but I somehow managed to bork my game with extra mods. Fortunately I have an install on my laptop with my mod collection previous to any errors, just need to make time to do a quick file transfer over the network and I’ll be in business again. Oh well, ended up playing more Yakuza 0 anyways. You might ask “Why play Yakuza 0 on Hallow’s Eve?” Just ask Merasmus…
I really hope you have a great time with 0 and Kiwami and decide to explore the rest of the series as well because it’s so damn good. The seriousness and the humour stay strong and never get old. One thing I love throughout it is that you can see it age. 0 is obviously set in the 80’s so has all those outdated quirks. Kiwami is set in 2005 I believe so has the tech of that time. But when you get to 6 it’s set in 2016 so there’s drones and text scammers, they did the aging of… Read more »
I’m really getting into the series! I even decided to dig up footage of Yakuza from the PS2 to see what that was like, didn’t know that Kiwami is basically the same thing, even the Japanese voice actors carried over! That’s Rad! I’m looking to get Kiwami 2 and Like A Dragon during sales. I thought about getting Kiwami 2 now, but I think 0 and Kiwami will keep me busy enough for now until the Winter Sale, that and well… everything else. 😛
I’m glad to hear it! Even though it took a while to get it’s footing in the west it’s great to see so many new people get into the series. I first played Yakuza 3 back in 2012 and it was still pretty rare to hear about then. Man how times have changed. They really go above and beyond with their work it’s incredible. You’ll maybe notice as well that evens from 0 are also injected into Kiwami 1 to keep it consistent which is a nice touch. The english voice acting is also quite…something. You’ve maybe heard of the… Read more »
The english voice acting is also quite…something. You’ve maybe heard of the infamous “get this arrogant mo-ther-fuc-ker”. Oh god yeah, found that pretty quickly in my travels. I even looked up the cast to see who the poor souls were who had to work on this and, wow… I actually recognized a good few of the names. I think Mark Hamil would have made a good Majima if perhaps better direction were at play, given he’s played Joker he is good at doing over the top insane! I don’t know how you get an anime/cartoon English cast to fail that… Read more »
I think the direction told them to be more, how do I put this, Americanized? There’s so much more swearing and insulting in the English dub that it loses the fairly serious Japanese charm for a more westernized aggressive, badass tone. Have you ever seen the Chinese movie Infernal Affairs and then watched it’s American remake The Departed? The original has around 5-6 swear words but the American remake has 237… Luckily in Judgement (another game you need to play which I think you would enjoy a lot by them) the English dub is really good and Yakuza: Like a… Read more »
Americanizing it makes sense when you pit it that way. I was also reading that the cast didn’t know their lines beforehand, and they had to try and sync their words with the other characters… that’s totally not a recipe for disaster.
I did see on the Like A Dragon Trailer that an English Dub was used, and what little I heard sounded like a step up!
