The Mind Of OverlordTomala

Saturday Night Open Thread

Just a couple nights ago I did a 4K recording test of NieR Replicant, all the while doing a private livestream of it to a couple friends just to see if I could make my computer explode. I’m quite happy to say that the magic smoke didn’t escape! I’ve really been hooked on this game, even played a bit more tonight! I’m thinking I’ll try and take a break from it this weekend, maybe play something else in my ever expanding library. I’ll pretty much have the place to myself tomorrow, that might mean taking over the couch to do some big screen playtime!

Work & Play

Did a little bit of work and a little bit of play tonight. I’ve been doing my best to complete at least one scene in SFM per night, and tonight I decided to play a little more NieR Replicant to end the evening. It gave me an excuse to break in the monitor a little more. 🙂

I talked about the game a little at work today with one of my work buds. He’s only played the northern console version, which is actually the same game, but with Papa NieR as the protagonist saving his daughter, instead of Brother NieR trying to save his younger sister.

Both games are pretty much the same, with only the lead character being the only main difference (and a slight change of dialogue). Replicant was originally exclusive to Japan, and Gestalt was marketed towards the Japanese XBox 360 (which wasn’t very popular in Japan) and was known as the main protagonist to the rest of the western world. This game has a really interesting history.

Unexpected Downtime

If you happened to visit the website (or any of the other connected websites) and were unable to access it I have to apologise. I woke up this morning and found that none of my WordPress sites could connect to their databases, and I couldn’t properly get to it until I got off work several hours later. Fortunately I found the problem… sorta. There was an important process that appeared to have crashed, and in one terminal command I had everything back up and running within minutes of arriving home. I’m still not too sure how or why it crashed though, the logs don’t have much to offer me for clues. This goes without saying, but I will be keeping a close watch. It doesn’t appear to be anything malicious at least.

***Update***

I seemed to have triggered it again when posting. This will require further experimentation.

First 4K Game Selfie

The new monitor arrived today! I spent more time configuring it than I did playing on it, but what little I’ve played so far is really nice! I’m looking forward to exporting my animations in 4K now too! Although 4K content itself will probably be a ways off since a a few terabytes of the video footage I’m digging through is in 1440p. At least the SFM cutscenes will look higher res.

I’ve Done Some Growing Up

Played through more NieR Replicant today. Played through a bunch of quests, advanced on the main story and become the only character to age in game. In five game years time I’ve gone from being a young sword wielding child, to a young androgynous albino Raiden clone. I can already tell that I’m going to need to do a second playthrough of this… I’ve already missed some quests that I can’t go back to… not to mention there are some multi-choices I’d like to revisit. Games like these are practically designed to be replayed, which makes up for the lack of mods.

NieR has it’s share of silliness like quite a few other JRPG games, but when it gets serious it really gets serious when it tugs at the heart strings. There was a character I remembered seeing from NieR Automata called Emil, and he actually dates back to NieR (or NieR Replicant in this case). When you first encounter him he’s a young boy in NieR, and for some weird reason he remains so after you become a man… at least until you go on a quest where his body undergoes some changes — just as his sister did:

Emil allows himself to be eaten by his sister to obtain control of her powers, all in the pursuit to control his petrification ability so they can thaw out Kaine. Unfortunately, the pursuit of this knowledge lead to him looking like a smaller version of his sister.

I really like the characters, they’re all very well written. I think my fave out of all of them though has to be Kaine:

It’s rare to find a character that shares the same vocabulary as you.

All Of The Irons Are In The Fire

I broke my cardinal rule of Saturday chill to continue work on this particular scene, it’s just too ridiculous for me to leave alone. I originally wanted to work on the gameservers, but by the time I got to my computer I was too tired to mess with it. I’ll take a stab at it sometime this weekend. My first goal will be to move the Quake servers, then the srcds servers will follow. I also want to look into other gmod gamemodes, as the Cinema gamemode is dead, and the Elevator gamemode has been losing its charm… though to be honest I’m surprised people gave it the amount of attention that they did. All you do on the elevator server is enter an elevator, stop on random floors that do weird stuff, and eventually make it to the top floor where you can partake in a game of pool, watch YouTube (if you could even get it to work) or mix yourself different varieties of smoothies that will either make you see colours, or kill you. What amazed me moreso, was watching players who have previously been logged as playing reconnecting just to ride the damned elevator again…

Assuming that my body doesn’t attempt to kill me tomorrow – I might consider doing some cleaning up. It’s something that I do after each holiday, an out with the old and in with the new kind of deal.

The Watermelon Diaries: Syrup Edition

It isn’t very often that I sweeten my tea (unless it’s a chai, or I’m sick and need a honey boost), but today I made an exception and had a little of this with some green tea. It’s like drinking sweet, sweet nectar. It was love at first sip this morning, when I added it to some mango black tea for some sweetness.

Just glancing at their website I can see they have some interesting recipes I wouldn’t mind trying in the not too distant future. I’m also trying to think of other teas that it could pair with. It can make an already refreshing tea even moreso with that alluring watermelon taste!

(This isn’t paid advertising btw… I just really love watermelon.)
