The Mind Of OverlordTomala

Tell Me Why I Haven’t Played This Yet

Once upon a time, in a lush green land surrounded by the rains of November, lived an Overlord with a library of tea, and numerous forms of entertainment that lay plentiful at their fingertips. After days of wielding guns, and fulfilling quests spanning from one universe to the next, the Overlord wanted to only hear a story. For each day the Overlord looks upon their library to begin, revisit or continue a new story, and Tell Me Why was the story of choice on a Saturday of chill.

Tell Me Why is developed by Dontnod, the same company that brought us the Life Is Strange series (which admittedly I need to finish, so many stories and so little time!) and pretty much carries the same spirit as the LiS series. Tell Me Why tells the story of two twins (Alyson and Tyler) who reunite with one another after ten years of being apart after a tragic incident involving one of the twins having to kill their own mother in self defense (this game sets the tone very quickly). In this universe you play from the perspective of Tyler, and much like most other Dontnod games, any choices you make in dialogue may or may not come back to bite you in the ass later on…

Right at the start of the game, one of the twins confesses to a cop about killing their mom in self defense after she freaked out over her child’s haircut, and later on in the game when they go through their old home they both recall memories of their mother in a not so positive light, and mainly refer to her as Mary-Ann. When searching through the upstairs bedroom you find “The Book Of Goblins”, It’s basically a storybook the two twins and mother put together over 10 years ago.

The twins constantly refer to themselves as the goblins, and the mother is portrayed as a Princess, and everyone else in the storybook is portrayed as an animal — I’m guessing they represent friends or family. It’s early on in the game, but when reading through the book I can tell some of these stories might have a deeper meaning than what would merely appear as a child’s personal adventure book. It appears to be necessary for solving certain puzzles.

The twins share a power called “The Voice”. It enables them to hear each others thoughts and feel how the other feels. They remember this lost power while trying to figure out how to get into the house, but they also discover a newer power: Projecting their memories like a hologram:

Tyler and Alyson witness a few different memories throughout the property; some helping them with certain puzzles, and childhood memories both light and dark. In having to walk around their old home, they also have to endure literally reliving their childhood. Tyler and Alyson bare witness to memories that range from simple childhood memories of finding treasure and telling stories, to dark memories of Mary-Ann. In this particular instance Tyler is remembering his mother, either not understanding or not wanting to understand that she is actually a he. I know a few people who are trans, one of them I’ve worked along side since my early beginnings, and I can only commend their bravery in finding out who they really are and braving the world with their knowledge. Much like Life Is Strange, this story game definitely makes the mind think about other perspectives, and sometimes that is necessary in order to understand where people are coming from.

I’ll need to return to this one, and I need to finish Life Is Strange! I think I have one more chapter to do. I remember getting depressed about something that happened in the game, and not feeling ready to go back to it. It’s easy to do when you have so many games to pick through. 😛

From The Demonic Hordes Of Mars To The Rednecks Of Pandora

It was another cold and foggy day; perfect for warm tea and catching up on a digital universe or two. I played DOOM Eternal, now with Ray Tracing! I also tackled some long overdue Borderlands 2 DLC with Yutram. We decided to begin our assault on Dragon Keep in Tiny Tina’s DLC, and so far this might be my favourite on a comedic scale. We’re definitely going to have to return to this one at a later date, and I might have to actually film it! 😛 I was happy enough just being able to play!

Accidental Hiatus

I’ve been around… I’ve just been very, very relaxed. I know when I go back it’ll be a total hellscape, so the best thing I can do for myself is enjoy one day at a time before returning next week. I’ve been finally tying up loose ends, and making up for lost time in different games. The weather has given me a good excuse to chill; it’s been the perfect warm beverage weather. I spent the better part of last night playing NieR Automata wrapped in a blanket on the couch with no distractions, and tonight I’m thinking of ending the evening on a similar note… perhaps with a different game.

I’ll try to post something of substance tomorrow, but since I’m currently on vacation I hold no promises. 😛

Late Night Open Thread

I hope everyone had a Spooktacular Halloween! It was a chill evening, kinda quiet, very rainy… I did a small marathon of Ghostrunner, and finished off the evening with some more Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night, it was a Stabby Sunday Evening to say the least with quite a few trophies! Although there was some playtime with my new smartwatch! It arrived in the mail yesterday, and after some trial and error I did finally get my smartwatch configured! I bit the bullet and bought a pinetime — I figured for $25 was safe to blow on what is essentially a wearable science experiment. I have it running the latest firmware from Infinitime (1.6.0) and it seems to be behaving. I’ll do a write up on it after getting to know it a wee bit more. I’d also looking into properly customizing it, and what hellish rituals I’ll have to go through to get it to my liking.

I Return From The Surface

I’m barely halfway through the work week and I’m already tired of people. I’m glad I have one last bit of vacation starting next week, as my traditional last hoorah before descending into the apocalyptic chaos that is the holiday season. I would have written something last night, but after having a long overdue talk with a good friend I wanted nothing more than to pass out upon the bed that doesn’t try to kill me. It was nice catching up though; it’s very hard for me to meet up with anyone online or in person lately, especially when everyone is on different schedules and/or timezones.

I hope to do more of this all next week (maybe even livestream!), among getting some other overdue shit done. I need to go to the post office, but by the time I’m ever able to go there it’s closed… I also need to do a linux reinstall on my surface, though I haven’t deemed it broken enough to reinstall yet. It won’t update anymore due to an issue with the linux surface repository. Reinstalling would give me an excuse to update the tablet firmware, and the only way to do that is to install Windows 10 temporarily and run the updater. When I’m done I can put Manjaro back in place. I also have a few other “rainy day projects” I’d like to tackle over my vacay. I’m already brainstorming about 87 different things. 😛

Evening Open Thread

Don’t have much to write… with a full day of work and plenty of to do’s I had to fulfill today there wasn’t much time for sitting down. Although, I did take a few minutes out of the evening to play a little Ghostrunner!

I plan to go into fuller detail on the game, but I want to play more before blowing my digital load of words about the epic awesomeness that is indeed Ghostrunner. I wanted to end the night with the scent of watermelon and go cybernetic parkour ninja, with a side of chamomile tea to help me get to sleep for yet another coma inducing day tomorrow.

Until then… Open Thread!

Live & Learn: Gaming Monitor Edition

I discovered over the weekend that my Acer VG270U P isn’t capable of HDR over DisplayPort, and if I switch to HDMI I can get HDR at the cost of the framerate. I didn’t know this at the time of researching, but this monitor has DisplayPort 1.2, which is incapable of true HDR output. I just figured since this was advertised as a 2020 gaming monitor that it would have DisplayPort 1.4, or at the very least 1.3.

It’s sad given this monitor is barely half a year old. I’m thinking I’ll put it back in its box and store it for emergency use, like if I have a monitor die and need a backup. This just gives me an excuse to go shopping for a 4K monitor I guess. 😛 Unfortunately I’m finding that the monitors are, like many other electronics at the mo, are being scalped for a profit because we live in a world of assholes with too much money. I’m not sure how long it will take me to track something down, but I figure with the 6800XT proving itself on the 4K proving grounds it would only be right to get a matching monitor. Then I can start delivering 4K content for YouTube! 😛

Lazy & Rainy Sunday

We had a few inches of rain today, made for a relaxing day of breakfast tostadas, all of the tea in the universe, and couch gaming. I’m continuing to excel at Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night, and just general goofing off in anything else. I played some Hades too, and tested a bunch of other games just to see how much of a load I could put on the system. That 6800XT is a real beast of a card in 4K! I’m kinda wishing I went 4K when I replaced my monitors earlier this year, ah well… I can enjoy 1440p for now, and I can always chill in the living room for a theatrical experience!

I wonder what my next 4K adventure will be… DOSBox? 😛
