Happy Easter! I’ve been playing more with MGSV:TPP and modding; it’s actually just as easy under Linux as it is under Windows! I ran SnakeBite Mod Manager under Wine and added my mods back in; including some new ones. I rescued Miller, captured enough victims on my own base to develop a cardboard box, kidnapped hired a translator. etc. I was actually going to add another game to test under Linux, but the call to play this was far too strong to ignore. I’m really happy with the results!
OMG Metal Gear Works Under Proton!
Last week I had a fun time playing Yakuza Kiwami under Proton, and for this weekend I decided to revisit the idea of running Metal Gear Solid V: TPP under Proton. My last attempts took place when Proton was a shiny new toy to be played with, and MGSV:TPP didn’t really agree with it. You could load the game, but only the HUD was visible. This time around cutscenes played properly, it remained stable the entire session, and there was only one graphical glitch at the start of the game.
I’m currently running the game vanilla, but have plans to see if I can get modding to work properly. Overall I’m quite impressed!
Evening Open Thread

I’m kinda bummed… I got lucky and won an EBay auction for a Red Devil Power Color Edition 6800XT for under the two grand premium! It was supposed to arrive today according to FedEx, but no such joy. What’s really strange is they left a phone call yesterday to expect it today between 9am and 6pm, and the tracking info hasn’t even been updated since the 29th.
I hope it arrives tomorrow; it’d be nice to start my weekend fondling a new GPU.
Early Animations From Portal 2
Went looking for early development stuff for Portal 2… was not disappointed. I always like seeing what creativity unfolded, and what would eventually lead to the final product for a game. Some of the included animations make it look like it could have been a horror game. Out of all of it I did like the tube ride!
Portal 2 SFM Diary
I’ve been plugging away at this again. I would have done some animating yesterday, but my adventures through Kamurocho left me in constant suspense. My head is back beyond the clouds though, and not just because I have that good watermelon laced shit. 😛 More fiddling planned for tomorrow.
Mediterranean Tostadas?
I’ve been experimenting with Mediterranean breakfasts for a couple of weekends now. Last week I made Mediterranean egg sandwiches, and for this weekend I’ve been enjoying some Mediterranean taste on top of a freshly fried tortilla or two. You can use premade tostadas, but I prefer frying my own in the pan in some olive oil, and some lime & chile seasoning. I also wanted a “dessert” for breakfast and opted to include some strawberry greek yogurt topped with granola and clementines. If you want to make your own you’ll need:
- Small Corn Tortillas
- Roasted Bell Pepper Hummus
- Eggs
- Deli Meat or Bacon (optional)
- Halved Cherry/Grape Tomatoes (or Tomato Slices)
- Diced Cucumber
- Jarred Roasted Bell Pepper
- Kalamata Olives
- Feta Cheese
Take a small pan and pour a thin layer of olive oil and place over medium heat, add tortilla and let fry until it starts to puff up. Flip tortilla over and season the fried side with salt, pepper, and any other seasoning you’d want to add (like cayenne, or lime chile seasoning). Finish frying 2nd side of tortilla and flip over again. Place tortilla on paper towel lined plate and let rest for a minute or two, or until the tortilla is cool enough to handle.
In the same pan, crack an egg open and fry it in the same oil, if you don’t have any oil leftover add a little more in the pan. Season eggs with salt and pepper. Cover pan and cook to desired consistency. I prefer my egg to be runny, but fully cooked works too. You can also make a scramble or mini omelet to fit over the tostada, but runny egg and tortillas just tasted too good together for me to pass up. 😛
Spread Hummus on tostada; Top with deli meat (if using), egg, cherry/grape tomatoes, veggies and feta cheese. I could have easily gotten away with eating one with some yogurt, but my eyes were bigger than my stomach when I made it. I was full for pretty much 99% of the day though, so there is that. It was delicious as it was colourful, and packed with flavour and protein. This might be one that I’ll have to include in my rotation of weekend breakfasts!
The Yakuza Is Linux Friendly?
I can say quite happily that Yakuza Kiwami seems to be passing the Linux test so far, well… kinda. Other than not being able to close the game properly, and having to spam the save button in order for it to generate a save for some reason, it’s pretty much the same performance that I get under Windows, framerate is pretty much the same and I haven’t run across any graphical glitches. I even got a few achievements! They were all centered around Majima but… meh.
Perhaps a few Proton versions from now it’ll work like a native game! One can hope anyway.
Saturday Evening Open Thread
I broke my cardinal rule of just chillin’ at the end of my final work day, and continued to play about in SFM with the Portal 2 project instead. I also began preparations on what will eventually be my new channel art for Twitch/YouTube; they’re in dire need of a new coat of paint. But now… I’ve become comfortably numb.
