The Obduction Updating Frenzy

Ever since the specs for Obduction have been declared things have been rather interesting at both the MOUL and Cyan forums.

Seems there are more people in the community than I expected that will actually be able to run Obduction. It is funny though watching people on ridiculously ancient hardware have sads about not being able to have a system that can run the game.

Well, I’m guessing it was enough for someone at Cyan to step forward and say something. I recommend reading the whole post in the link. Here are some of the bits I found interesting:

Between in-house testing, and a 3rd party hardware lab taking a look at the title, we really tried to find that minimum spot where the game was perfectly playable without the performance taking enough of a dive to be an issue. In reality, the game will start on anything that supports DirectX 11, but on the early DX11 cards they’re just too old to be able to push what we’re doing. The one gig of video memory limitation is honestly aiming a bit low as well. The game at it’s lowest settings can stay within this, but you’re looking at a pretty poor visual quality. Turning the graphics up past the lowest point, you’re going to start seeing a large amount of stuttering and hitching as the game has to swap between video memory and system memory. A 2 or 3 gig card helps, but the 4 gig of the recommended specs is highly recommended. If you’re picking up a new card for the game, try to aim for at least 4 gig of video ram.

Funny, even they admit that 1GB is kind of a stretch when it comes to minimal requirements.

I am afraid that there is a can of worms to open however: the AMD vs Nvidia battle. To be upfront and honest, the game runs about 15% faster on nvidia cards than the equivalent AMD card. The nvidia cards also seem to deliver a bit smoother experience as well. There’s nothing wrong at all on the AMD side however and both companies really do offer the same visual quality. You won’t lose or gain any pretty effects with either manufacturers card. But if you’re picking out a new card for the title, be aware you’re going to need a slightly faster Radeon than you will a GeForce if you’re looking for that super-fluid 60 fps experience.

I am going to reserve my judgement until I play the game on my hardware, but I’m not exactly happy to see another game that may possibly fall to GameWorks.

Hard drives and storage:

The one area that makes a huge difference with the game, and isn’t necessarily reflected in the system specs is hard drive/ system storage speed. We do a *lot* of streaming from the drive during gameplay, and slower drives have a terrible time keeping up. A generic traditional mechanical hard drive is going to see a lot of hitching and pausing during the game while it loads in. Outside of a video card, upgrading your drive to a solid-state drive if you haven’t yet will make a huge impact in how smooth of an experience you’ll have with the game, along with being a very nice and very noticeable upgrade for your machine in general.

This has me a bit concerned. If you need to run your game on an SSD to stop hitching and stuttering then something is really really wrong. I didn’t get this with any UE4 game I’ve played so far, and that’s on a 2TB 7200 RPM Hitachi Ultrastar with 32mb cache.

I know I’ll be able to play this… But between the NVidia favoritism and info regarding drive performance I’m not sure what to think. Guess I’ll figure that out on release.

Oh, and psssst, Cyan! Stop Uncategorizing your posts! Only n00bs have the excuse to use Uncategorized as a category. That’s a big no no with for a blog/website as it’s hard to find uncatagorized posts. Search engines have a better time finding your posts when they’re tagged and categorized properly! Unless… Finding your blog is supposed to be a difficult puzzle in of itself. Never mind.

It’s a fine day to start again…

I had some inconsistencies with my Skyrim install, so ended up having to clean up and start over again… I’m not too upset, this time around I’m going to keep a journal of my character’s adventures. Tell the tale of Skyrim from the perspective of my character. My character thinks the Ulfric Stormcloak, who was gagged and murdered the high king with his voice is one fucking horrible bard. So I’m kinda sorta being In Character with this, but since this isn’t a lore friendly playthrough it’ll be kinda funny.

Late Night Open Thread

Got some much needed rest, mainly lazed about in bed this morning, had some scrambled eggs, bacon and brie for breakfast, and got around to making that salsa I mentioned in passing. Peach nectarine mango salsa. Turned out ok, but it isn’t hot enough. Will have to add more heat next time. 😛

Also helped my brother out. Taught him some basic DOSBox stuffs as he was interested in playing the old Mortal Kombat games from the 90’s. I might actually have to snag some copies myself. They’re free at myabandonware.com, which I enjoy going to whenever I feel like finding some nostalgia. Not sure why games like Doom are there, since those are still being sold.

The stuff tumors are made of

I went out for a walk earlier today (wanted ingredients for some salsa) and I heard one of the neighbors across the street say this to someone: “I’ll have you know that I still own those shorts and…” then my brain shut off immediately to protect itself from a tumor. What the fuck kind of a statement is that to make?

Maybe this can be a game in it’s own right. What would you finish that statement with?

System specs for Obduction

Here are the system specs that you’ll need to be able to run Obduction, as per the Obduction Steam Page:

Minimum:

    • OS: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer
    • Processor: CPU Intel i5-2500 equivalent or better
    • Memory: 8 GB RAM
    • Graphics: GeForce 660 GTX w/1GB / AMD 7700 series w/1GB equivalent or better
    • Storage: 20 GB available space
Recommended:

    • OS: Windows 10 64 bit
    • Processor: CPU Intel i5-4590 equivalent or better
    • Memory: 16 GB RAM
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 970 w/4 GB / AMD R9 290 w/4 GB equivalent or better
    • Storage: 20 GB available space

It looks like I’ll be able to run Obduction decently. I’m upgrading my GPU from an R9 290 to a R9 Fury, and I have 12 GB instead of 16 on my desktop. So I’ll be in good condition for the release. 😀

World of the optional worker, oh… and Open Thread

Continued my Skyrim hiatus by chilling on the couch today and playing some DMC4, the special edition. Hack n Slash seemed to fit my mood today, especially after getting a call not that long ago that I’m needed to come and work in the morning for someone. Her kids are sick, which is why I decided to take the shift (that and more money isn’t something to shake a stick at), but I can’t help but notice I’ve been having to cover for her a lot lately. She isn’t a slouch, in fact she’s a really hard dedicated worker. But it seems like if she can find a way to get a day off somehow she’ll do it in a heartbeat. And lately I’ve been getting screwed out of having my usual days off. Considering I’ve been slowly getting better while having to bust my ass to cover for these people, I can’t say that I’m a happy camper.

Because of my line of work I can only ever have days off on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Her consistent days off are Friday and Saturday. But whenever she can it seems like she’ll try to get me to do her work on Sundays. She’s even hinted at me that I should learn her job just in case she can’t make it in. Which is funny because when I fired the same thing back to her she declined because my job has too much heavy lifting… And as I’ve said before I’m a difficult one to replace. Only one person in our department can do my job, and he’s the one I was promoted to replace because he didn’t do the job. The only others are managers, and they have their manager duties to tend to… so unless I schedule my time off way ahead of time or if there’s an emergency that prevents me from working, no one can really do my job.

I’ve also been noticing in my near decade of servitude in the life of the average worker that a lot of people (millennials a few years younger than me specifically with some exceptions to the rule) have this mentality that having a job is an optional thing. Lots of people who I’ve come to know over the years are really nice, but when it comes to their work ethic they are not dependable in the slightest. This is a very bad attitude to have in a limited job economy and they can’t see that at all. One of said workers put in his two weeks notice before going on a trip because he wanted to come back and “start fresh”, a friend of mine is struggling at a job right now after already having a few failed jobs under his belt and is considering quitting for multiple reasons I won’t go into, other than to say they can’t take constructive criticism unless it’s always positive, or go a day without anyone complimenting them on their work. In fact I notice that a lot with people who are just a few years younger than me and hell, even people who are older than me. People don’t grow up. I think growing up is only a physical concept.

People these days seem more likely to be mentally stunted, and I thank some of today’s technology for that. Lots of these people I talk with I notice were either babysat by consoles and games, or are people who can’t talk to you outside work unless you have a smartphone to text on. Hell, the one lady I’m covering for complained that I didn’t have a smartphone so I could get her texts about how “she might not be able to come in and work”, because you know… Calling me at home and using your phone as a, you know… a phone, is just soooo difficult.

I have two days off in a row next week. I’m going to be deliberately busy so I can relax. 😛

Obduction gets a release date

Obduction

It isn’t June, but I’ll take it. 😛

Cyan, Inc. the award-winning creators of Myst and Riven, today announced that Obduction, their highly-anticipated adventure game, will be launching simultaneously on PC, Mac and Oculus Rift, and will be available for download from Steam, GOG.com, Humble Store, Mac App Store, and the Oculus Store on July 26, 2016 for $29.99.

Cyan also released a Kickstarter update explaining why the delay:

  • Fit and polish. That extra month gives us some quality time – to up the… quality – a good thing!
  • Unreal Engine 4 updates. We don’t control these, and Epic just released a big new update that changes a few things.
  • Oculus Rift VR version. This doesn’t affect everyone, but it helps us to tie everything into a larger launch event.
  • Avoid industry noise. There are a few big industry things happening at the end of June that our small company doesn’t need to try to shout over.

I don’t mind the wait. Plenty of other stuff for me to do in the meantime…

You can connect your GOG and Steam accounts

An interesting and very neat concept. GOG is working with willing game companies to connect some Steam games to your GOG account.

To connect your library with GOG.com, sign in to your active Steam account via this page. NOTE: Make sure your Steam Privacy Settings & Profile Status are set to public.

You’ll be able to permanently import all the games listed below to your GOG.com library – assuming you own them. The eligible games are limited-time offers made possible by participating developers and publishers, so stay tuned for more games to come.

You can connect only one Steam account with your GOG.com library. This process is permanent – choose wisely!

The nice part is that it doesn’t remove your Steam version, it just gives you the option of downloading it through GOG for future purposes. Which is great if you want DRM free copies. Plus with Steam being a bit dodgy lately it’s nice to have an alternative. GOG and even their Galaxy client are shaping up nicely. It’s already a good place for picking up old games. There’s even a few I have my eyes on, but I’m waiting for a sale first.
