Another Retro Evening

Think I rode out the last bit of my DOS Gaming kick with some Commander Keen 2. Didn’t get very far though – kept dying in Mountain Dew. Thus ending my DOS Gaming Spree… for now. I’ll probably play something slightly less retro tomorrow. 😛

Duke on Deck

Man, these DOS Games look so perfect on the Steam Deck! DOS era game UI’s have what feels like a perfect fit on the screen. I made it to Level 3 in Episode 1. I immediately remembered why I took a long break from Duke Nukem II: The Damn Spiders…They latch onto you and drain your life until they kill you… unless you shake them off by pressing left and right over and over. Something about playing it on a smaller device made it less annoying, probably because this was a another series I would have loved to see on a handheld during childhood. It’s nice to give Duke the true D-Pad Status.

Feeling Cosmic

Today I decided to tackle the 2nd Episode of Cosmo’s Cosmic Adventure! Another fun one for my Steam Deck

There was a lot of dying on the 2nd level (I’m a snob for trying to get as many stars as possible), but I did make it safely through the wild mushroom jungle. Maybe now that I have it on Steam Deck I’ll finally have some patience to finish it! I’ve already made it farther in Jazz Jackrabbit and Commander Keen than ever, so it only makes sense to add this gem to the roster.

This Bunny Delivers Bullets

Happy Easter! I celebrated by adding this old game onto my Deck! I have it running through the Steam branch of RetroArch with the DOSBoxPure Core installed. It feels so right having it in the palms of my hands, and the nice thing about old retro games is looooong battery life! Maybe now I’ll finally be able to beat all the other episodes!

Babies That Travel At The Speed Of Cocaine

Managed to save more Stuffed Animals; this time from a pack of Baby Space Kangaroos that bounce around like they all just OD’d on Space Vegemite. It wouldn’t be so bad except each encounter with them knocks you down for a few seconds. Sadly, I had to take one of them down. Otherwise my attempts at escape would have been highly unlikely. I also managed to save Sydney (The Earth one, not Space Sydney), and Rome!

Now I just need to figure out how to traverse the Mountain Dew room without falling in, there’s always next time.

Fun With Steam Deck Configs

I’ve been crafting a Commander Keen config for my Steam Deck! I’m getting tired of opening the on screen keyboard to save my progress, or answer old school dialogue windows. I also put in a radial menu for save numbers! It’s like having a computer built into a better Steam Controller. Once I’m happy with it I’m planning to make it public. There are already a few other configs to choose from on the Workshop, and I’d like to contribute! 😀
