If you’re on Linux/Unix/Mac you might want to watch out for “ShellShock”

Friend of mine linked this in our mumble chat this morning. It’s an exploit found in nix systems that lets people remotely take control of your system using Bash.

The flaw has been found in a software component known as Bash, which is a part of many Linux systems as well as Apple’s Mac operating system.

The bug, dubbed Shellshock, can be used to remotely take control of almost any system using Bash, researchers said.

Experts said it was more serious than the Heartbleed bug discovered in April.

Keep an eye out for a patch on your distro of choice.

My Linux library be growin’

Borderlands 2 for Linux is on the horizon, and tonight I also noticed that Dead Island is on the list as well. So good to see big name titles like that for those who appreciate the tux for what it is. I want to see more of this. I want to see most (if not all) of my library working under Linux.

Open Nerd Thread

I found out that my Logitech F710 gamepad works under Linux with no additional drivers if I leave it in direct input mode. πŸ˜€ I tested a couple games with it and it recognizes that a controller is present.

The rest of my evening consisted of customizing KDE to my liking… Yeah I’m a nerd. I have a nice blue setup right now though. Downloaded a ton of schemes, themes and other stuff to make it look cool.

I think I’ll give Windows some love tomorrow though. Been a few days since I’ve been under there. πŸ˜›

Obduction for Linux? Yes please!

The Unreal Engine is getting Linux support (as of version 4.1) which means companies and groups who choose to develop with it will be able to make their games available to not just Windows and Mac users, but to the Linux platform as well. Cyan is developing Obduction under Unreal Engine 4 so it would only make sense for a couple people to ask about it. Cyan answered via Kickstarter today… sorta.

Linux support

Epic has announced that the Unreal 4 engine will have Linux support. We would love to support Linux and we are currently evaluating what it means for the scope and cost of development.

I hope they go through with it (especially since it would mean more copies sold to pure Linux users). Gaming under Linux is in still a young idea that’s still getting better, and I’d like to see Linux someday with a nice library like Windows has of equal RPG/MMO/FPS instead of the FPS’s being outnumbered by RPG’s and simulators. There needs to be more versatility, and with companies like Valve, Unreal and Croteam already switching to OpenGL that’ll set an excellent course for the future of Linux! Now if only the neckbeards could cooperate better…

I know what my weekend project is going to be.

Updated to the latest kernal under Fedora 20 this morning only to have more grief happen. I lost communication in mumble (everything turned horribly autotuned) and even before the kernal update mumble was giving me slight problems. Each time I started mumble it kept doing a sigterm on an audio process. Since my video drivers haven’t been working properly under Fedora 20 anyway, I’ll just go say fuck it and go back to 19. The few bugs I had in 19 were in 20 anyway with extras thrown in.

Oh well, I was bored and had my little adventure. πŸ˜› I think tomorrow I’ll start copying off my files again. Luckily Linux doesn’t take forever to reinstall like any version of Windows. I can be up and running at full throttle in half a day without having to take freaking forever to install updates and restart over and over again.

Duke Nukem Forever was so horrible that Duke 3D got a multiplayer update

Oh well. I’m sure it’ll make some people happy. I may even give it a shot at some point. But yes, Duke Nukem 3D Megatron Edition got an update on Steam yesterday that allows people to play multiplayer together.

Again, not a bad thing. But methinks 3D Realms reeeealy seems to be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Garrys Mod and Linux… still needs work.

It’s weird. I can play Source games fine, but Garrys Mod? It still isn’t ready. I even tried setting graphics to lowest of the low and it still lagged like hell. Playing multiplayer made the client even more slow. I guess I’ll be checking back in on it whenever it updates to see if there are any improvements. Maybe after I update to the next kernal (I noticed they pushed out another one recently) I can give it another shot. I haven’t heard anything spectacular about it when it comes to graphics though.
