I’m not dead!

There’s a knife in mah buns.

Made it to my destination, first thing we did was grab some big ass burgers which are great for absorbing the amount of alcohol we planned to partake in tonight.

It was pretty cold this time around, in fact there was some snow on the drive up here. It rained for most of our wine walk, ended up back at our hotel. We’re staying at a casino, and I passed the one armed bandit machines, apparently they were made by Konami. I had a dream the other night about wanting to murder a horde of pachinko machines but was held back by a friend. Tonight I had the urge again, but remembered this was the real world after all… and things like that don’t make me break out in a metal rash.

Starting the day off right

Figured I would treat myself to a long needed homemade breakfast. I made a Thai style omelet seasoned with lime, fish sauce and Shichimi Togarashi (Japanese pepper and seasoning mix), then I filled the omelet with Swiss Cheese (I know it isn’t Thai, but fuck it I love filling my omelets) and roasted red pepper. Then of course there’s bacon and buttered toast with some passionfruit papaya black tea with some honey, because I need a little sweetness in my life. :zorak:

Yesterday was therapeutic

Yesterday was nice. I had a short work day, came home and made some cherry blossom green tea with a plan to clean bedding. While doing that I decided to cook up a homemade bowl of miso ramen using dashi granules and the white miso paste I got the other day. Firstly, I used granules (which some would consider a sin) because I didn’t want to make an entire thing of soup stock, it’s ok in a pinch but I think it tastes better when prepared from scratch. Then I threw in some mirin, sake, soy sauce, the miso paste, wakame and baby portabella mushrooms. I didn’t think to take a picture but it turned out really nice, served it in a large ramen bowl and everything.

I also prepped dinner yesterday. I read about a brilliant idea to marinade steak in Chinese black bean sauce, so I started marinading early in the day so it would have a nice taste later at night. I also sliced up three colors of bell pepper, a small onion and threw in the remaining of the morning mushrooms. That all tasted good with the jasmine rice.

I’m surprised, the bean sauce gave the steak a nice dark flavor. Then I finished off the meal and had some sake before retiring to nice clean sheets. Definitely started off my weekend much nicer than last week. It was also kind of the sun to show up, I almost forgot what it looked like. 😛 I was gently woken by it today. Finally nice to have some weather during the day that isn’t completely freezing.

Felt better today, work was short and calm. I have another short day tomorrow, will probably conjure up something for dinner tomorrow night and the next. Since Mom will be working late, and compared to everyone else in the house my dinner menu is a constant changing palate. I might start sharing pictures of what I create, tomorrow I’m thinking something simple like Mac n Cheese with sausage or tuna, and maybe something from my Shanghai cookbook for Friday. I’m pretty much the one the family goes to whenever we want anything Asian made I’ve noticed. After all my years of studying various cuisines from China, Japan, Thailand, etc I seem to have developed a taste and look for what goes in a dish, like what noodles to use for what dish, what sauce to make to go with what meat, how to make a nice miso soup stock, etc. I know I can never beat anything authentic, but it’s nice to have a good substitute for nights when you don’t feel like going out for the real thing.

A good day for tea

After a nice bit of rest I feel much better, only took a total of 17 hours. Probably would have been longer if it hadn’t been for the sun shining on my face. I came home yesterday feeling pretty exhausted. Played some Skyrim for a bit until it crashed, then I did too not long after. Woke up to some frosty cold weather. No wonder I hibernated for so long…

It’s been a lovely day to ingest warm beverages. I found an interesting blend of Earl Grey a few days ago that I’ve been meaning to try. It has calendula petals in it and an extra touch of what makes a good Earl Grey, the beragmot oil. It tasted pretty good, the flowers added an interesting spin on a classic tea favorite of mine.

The brand is called Pinky Up. They appear to be new in the tea business, and I’d have to say they’re off to a great start! I’ve tried their Tiramisu tea which has actual white chocolate and coffee in it, that was pretty damn excellent. I bought all the other teas they had available (new selection I found at work, one of the few times I’ll impulse buy. 😛 )

I promised myself that when I woke up today I would prepare Miso Soup for breakfast. I did not disappoint myself, it was very good. Around lunch time I threw in some soba noodles. There are no more leftovers… I’ll have to make more.

Other than that I pretty much kicked back. I was thinking of tidying up a bit but my body kinda told me no. Ended up going into the cinema and watching goofy stuff, then kinda-sorta babysitting some kids that appeared. I managed to ban one of them. Then I played a small bit of Skyrim because I realized I went almost an entire day without wielding a sword… That is a problem that needed to be corrected.

Oh, I also have a new scarf. You can see me rocking it with my purple white hair.

So many people think the silver hair is deliberate, I was going to fix it… but with all the positive feedback I figured I’d keep it. Plus this is going to sound strange, but I’ve started to like it. Even though people at work see my Skyrim character and assume that it’s literally me recreated in the game… Lovely, I have a doppelganger… And it isn’t Bacon Lara.

Raindrop cakes look fabulous

I’ve never seen anything like this before, now I want to find the ingredients and make my own!

I’m seriously considering it. I already have to order some of my pantry stuffs off of Amazon since locally we’ve stopped carrying some of my favorite things, like soba/udon noodles. Why not stock up on other stuff too? I’ve even been thinking of making Miso soup from scratch as well which already was difficult to obtain.

And when I become good at making things like raindrop cakes I’ll have to see if I can use juices in place of water. For some reason using watermelon juice as a base for something like that sounds really nice.

Got some much needed rest, mainly lazed about in bed this morning, had some scrambled eggs, bacon and brie for breakfast, and got around to making that salsa I mentioned in passing. Peach nectarine mango salsa. Turned out ok, but it isn’t hot enough. Will have to add more heat next time. 😛

Also helped my brother out. Taught him some basic DOSBox stuffs as he was interested in playing the old Mortal Kombat games from the 90’s. I might actually have to snag some copies myself. They’re free at myabandonware.com, which I enjoy going to whenever I feel like finding some nostalgia. Not sure why games like Doom are there, since those are still being sold.
