Just when I switch to FireFox I find this out…

So this isn’t looking very good for FireFox users…

Mozilla has announced a new Extension API for Firefox browser called ‘WebExtensions‘ that is compatible with API used by Blink-based Chrome and Opera browsers, and they want to deprecate current Firefox XPCOM/XUL/XBL APIs from 12 or 18 months from now.

I’m hoping Seamonkey gets fixed before this happens, or that the developers get the more important plugins like NoScript working under the new FireFox. I don’t see why they’re doing this, the one saving grace of FireFox is the giant library of addons you can choose from. And now they’re going to try and be more like Opera and Google Chrome? There’s a reason why people use FireFox and Seamonkey, and that’s to not use Opera and Google Chrome. I’m not the only one with a gripe about this either.

I’m all for change and everything, but this is like the changes that have been done recently to Windows 10, or someones favorite Linux distribution, unnecessary and annoying.

Setting my Fedora on fire.

New motherboard is installed. So far everything seems to be working great apart from Fedora. I decided to try Fedora 22 and I’m not really impressed with it, nor am I impressed with the direction the Distro has taken. Their website friggen sucks these days.

They’ve taken to streamlining everything. I like downloading one ISO and being able to pick and choose what I want to install within the installation, and being that I used Fedora between my desktop and game server I liked having just one disc. Now they’re putting people into groups like “workstation”, “server” and “cloud”. And apparently the hip thing these days is to install from a live CD rather than just run anaconda directly…

In Fedora 20 and backward you could choose which main desktop environment you wanted to install, now you’re forced into GNOME unless you burn a spin. I don’t mind GNOME on tablet interfaces but for the desktop it just flat out sucks. The first thing I did was install xfce and uninstall GNOME… only to have Linux shut down, restart and enter linux at the terminal level. Amazed and pissed at the same time I tried to launch X only to find it had been uninstalled along with GNOME. I couldn’t help but laugh. Usually when you uninstall something that would cause something like this to happen you’re met with SOME KIND of warning. But no. Even though I had xfce installed after the fact it would rather flip me the bird and leave me at the terminal.

I was going to reinstall GNOME and X via Yum but decided that I’d rather throw this DVD in the trash and opted to go back into Windows and burn a spin with xfce on it. I still had to use a live CD but at least I was rid of an ugly tablet interface I would never use.

So I finally made it through the install. The first thing I did was run all the necessary updates. I was disheartened to learn that Mumble was no longer in the repositories as of Fedora 21 for some stupid reason, but at the same time it wasn’t like I never compiled a program before. So I decided to save that task for later and went straight to installing seamonkey, then downloading my GPU drivers.

I opened my terminal and ran super user so that I could do the install, and I couldn’t because I was missing two dependencies. gcc was uninstalled and so was kernel headers. How could you not include these? I mean I like lean OS’s, but c’mon… gcc, kernel headers and module packs are a must.

It had just enough for me, and what it didn’t have I could eventually find with experimentation and research. It wasn’t like Ubuntu where it included a bunch of stuff I would never use.

Anyway… I installed the dependencies and gave it another shot, it still kept telling me that it couldn’t find the kernel headers.

fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers. /lib/modules/4.0.8-300.fc22.x86_64/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system.

I decided to follow the pathing and got stuck at “build” which for whatever reason was a dead symbolic link.

I’ve given up for now and have been doing a little bit of research. But I have a feeling that I might have to retire Fedora regardless. I’ve liked it since early Red Hat, and I’m one to roll with changes… but this streamlining and lack of choice isn’t something I particularly care for. You can’t just put me into one of three boxes.

Here’s another thing I don’t get. Why is it that in this day and age of fast internet we have these minimalistic installations? I find it funny that in the early days of the internet you had to download what was a giant distro that gave you choices over what you wanted installed, and now here we are with high speed internet connections, with these minimalistic installations… Something… seems off.

Swing and a miss

I had something pointed out to me at work that I wasn’t going to write about. But with the events that happened yesterday I feel like I should. I’ve been stewing at it since then and I really need to get this written out. So lets start from the beginning.

Two days ago when I showed up for work one of my coworkers shared something he stumbled upon from a website that posts lots of junk, someone posted in the personals section of said site looking for someone they saw working at a particular place, with particular hair, and a particular item of their body they had a hard time not staring at. The place they described was where I work, and the person they described was me. I was a little creeped out by it. But I shrugged it off anyway and figured it wasn’t anything worth writing about. It was posted over a month ago, so why make a big deal out of it?

That was until…

Yesterday I was helping someone in our console section, and he wanted to know the improvements were between the old gen and new. So I filled in the details and he ended up telling me he hasn’t cared about consoles in a long time and that he preferred PC. So we talked about PC gaming and how fun it was to mod, and then we got on the subject of Skyrim, it was a nice conversation and it left off on a good note… until I walked off. Then he commented about that particular part of me that he found attractive. I’ll give you a hint: it wasn’t my eyes. Anyways the comment hit me below the belt and ruined my mood for the day. I wasn’t expecting this especially a day after having it pointed out to me that someone was looking for me on at least one particular site. I informed everyone who worked with me about these events so they could keep a lookout.

What pisses me off is that the conversation went really well, we had some common interests, he was real nice looking, but then he had to ruin it with a sexual comment. He might as well of said “Hey I got a bucket of chicken… ya wanna do it?”.

This world man… where did everything go wrong.

Lilies… my only weakness.

I only had one day off this week, but the bright side is I got overtime pay to look forward to. 😀 They offered me more overtime for next week but I ended up declining since I’ve been sick. I’m not sure if it’s a bug going around, or the Easter lilies we’ve been selling. They’re so potent that they dry out my throat, make my nose water and burn my eyes. We’ve had people complain about them causing headaches too. In fact it becomes difficult for me to speak, not to mention my lungs start to burn. And when you’re in this type of environment for as much as 9 hours it kinda gets to you after awhile… I’ll have to talk to them tomorrow if this continues, although my hopes aren’t too high as other people have complained in the past.

The solution? Get a doctors note… What a waste of time and resources. It wouldn’t take much effort to move these damn things outside to a ventilated area, but noooo you have to take time out of your life and a doctors life to get some fucking note for why you can’t work…

Fun fact: If you drive and text you’re a friggin’ moran

You know, it’s pretty sad that research had to be conducted to show that driving while texting isn’t such a good idea.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDWmwxQ_NnY

Researchers analyzed the six seconds leading up to a crash in nearly 1,700 videos of teen drivers taken from in-vehicle event recorders. The results showed that distraction was a factor in 58 percent of all crashes studied, including 89 percent of road-departure crashes and 76 percent of rear-end crashes. NHTSA previously has estimated that distraction is a factor in only 14 percent of all teen driver crashes.

Of course I’m glad they decided to take the time to point this out, because we live in a world where you practically have to have warning signs on everything.

+1 for Square Enix

I found this to be an interesting article on Kotaku regarding an upcoming game called Life Is Strange.

Apparently Dontnod shopped the game around to a number of different publishers before going with Square Enix, and it turns out most of them wanted to change its protagonists into men. That would have been a real shame, but luckily it didn’t happen.

Not surprising that Square Enix would have no issues with female protagonists, considering they had no problem with the Tomb Raider reboot. It’s still rather disappointing that quite a few companies would want to change something as stupid as gender. I mean, it’s the 21st century and this is still a hurdle? Why would some of these companies think females are a risk? Maybe it’s just me, but I never looked at a character as the ultimate say in if a game is great or terrible. For me it comes down to gameplay, story, dialogue etc. If any of those attributes are met well enough they can still be great if the other attributes are lacking. Like say for example if a game has great gameplay but the storyline is dismal, or vice versa.

I hope this game does well, if only to shove it in the other companies faces.

In Other News: People are still morons

I’m starting to think people are losing the meaning behind the word “emergency”. It isn’t an emergency if your favorite fast food joint runs out of chicken. It isn’t an emergency if facebook is down (and in many cases it’s probably a blessing). It isn’t an emergency if your jello has gone missing. And it CERTAINLY isn’t an emergency that PlayStation Network is down.

What happened to going to the website to see what the problem is? Or using a search engine? I never would have thought about calling 911 if say for example Steam went down.

Damn we have really let ourselves go…

Florida Prisons really know how to hard boil a guy…

Trigger warning: If you have a weak stomach you might want to stop reading right now. This is about a man who was boiled in prison by some prison guards, and while there are no pictures included it was hard enough for me to write this. But it’s too stupid for me to not rant about it:

Before heading to bed I usually take one more swoop of teh internetz to see if there is anything interesting before hitting the sack. Sort of like a bedtime story of sorts. What I found in my feeds didn’t have a happy ending for anyone.

MIAMI, FL — A torturous “punishment” session turned fatal for a mentally-ill prisoner, when prison guards forced him to stand in a tiny shower stall while being blasted by scalding hot water until his skin began to shrivel away from his body and he died. Fellow inmates say he begged for his life before collapsing in the shower.

He was in prison for possessing cocaine and he was accused of crapping on the prison floor… when did being mentally ill merit such a horrific punishment? I’m not trying to defend someone who ended up in prison for storing drugs, but at the same time these prison guards committed a murder as far as I’m concerned. Prisoner or not that was illegal and immoral. I wouldn’t wish that death on my worst enemy. Except maybe the people who would force someone to do this…

Rainey, who suffered from mental illness, was accused of defecating in his cell without cleaning it up. The Florida’s Department of Corrections often comes up with cruel and imaginative punishments for prisoners — allegedly ranging from starvation diets to forcing prisoners to fight so the guards could place bets.

I know some Pelican Bay prison guards (current and retired) who live around here, and there are at least two who would have the same personality traits as the guards in the news story. It makes me question what type of personality you would have to possess to want to do these things to people. If these people couldn’t become prison guards where would they end up? Would they be murders?

Of course this being America I wouldn’t be surprised if this became the new death penalty.

Oh god I’m still awake…

Damn you TF2 for keeping me up late! Actually, it helped me get out some aggression. I found out tonight that two of our co-workers are getting laid off due to lack of hours to give. According to our boss the company is allowing 700 hours for the whole department, but our store manager says that’s too many and that we can only use 500. Which means for some reason we have to lose two extra people and become even more horribly understaffed.

On top of that a long time co-worker is retiring soon. She was originally going to stay longer because our boss said she was needed, but then she changed her mind again when her hours were cut too. Obviously she wasn’t needed that much…

I talked with her a bit during my lunch tonight. Since I’m going to be on the national healthcare plan I’m contemplating looking for other places to work. Since I don’t depend on them for insurance anymore and I wouldn’t even be able to qualify due to the lack of hours given to me (I have to have 24 or more in a work week or it gets lost. Lately I’m lucky if I can even get 20), so I’m thinking if things don’t get better (which they probably won’t) I’ll look for other places in town to work. I just need to keep an eye out for openings.

Get the duck out of here.

I’m really getting sick and tired of the Duck Dynasty thing. Lots of people in town (including co-workers) were extremely pissed off about Phil Robertson being thrown off the air, and have been rejoicing his triumphant return ever since but are still pissed off at how they would even think of oppressing a fellow Christian for his beliefs. One of my co-workers decided to ask my opinion on the situation which would prove later to be a mistake. I kept it light, basically telling him that they’re fakes. I explained to him the picture I found of them 11 years ago before the beards, and how it was obvious that they grew them out for TV. He defended that by saying “People do different things for TV” and I said “Yes, but it’s supposed to be a ‘reality’ show”, and then he tried to tell me that it was wrong for them to take him off the air because of “one thing”. Why are these people only focusing on the gay comment and not this comment:

“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field…. They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!… Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”

I imagine that if I brought up this bit about marrying girls as young as 15 or 16 it would also fall on deaf ears. Yes, Phil Robertson mentioned this back in 2009 at a Christian retreat.

“They got to where they’re getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting ’til they get to be about 20 years old before they marry ’em,” Robertson says in a video clip that resurfaced Monday. “Look, you wait ’til they get to be 20 years old, the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They’ll pick your ducks.”

Yeah, you wanna marry them while they don’t know the world from outside your toolshed. It doesn’t end there either:

“Make sure that she can cook a meal. You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out. Make sure she carries her Bible. That’ll save you a lot of trouble down the road,” he said.

It’s funny reading this then having to listen to people complain about how his religious beliefs got him thrown off of A&E. Yes, everyone knows that Christians in America are the most oppressed. All 70% of them… 🙄
