As of this post I’m officially up and running on the new AlmaLinux webserver! All databases are pointing to their proper locations, the new Guild Of Slackers website is up!… kinda. I’m doing a bit of redecorating before I go live with it. 😀 I’ll probably unleash the wiki once I finish my plans for the main website — it’s basically going to be a web-portal of sorts, showing group information and our lines of communication (Discord, Mumble, Steam Group etc). I don’t see much of a point in making it a group website like before, especially since most people use the above mentioned for communication purposes. Then I still have to do the gameservers… then I can take a break from dependency hell and get back to focusing on the more artsy digital stuff.

I’m Baaaaaaaack…
Ok… if you’re reading this, then I actually did something right!
This blog is now on the new webserver! It took some trial and error getting it transferred and viewable, but it has been done! My brain has overcome dependency hell. Now to take care of all the other sheeeet.
The Upgradening Approaches
I’m planning to move the websites over to the AlmaLinux server tomorrow, so you can expect there will be some downtime while I get everything in place. I’m already backing some files via sftp, and I’ve already backed off the SQL databases and virtual host files. So far the only snag I’ve run into is installing phpMyAdmin, but that can be set aside for now. I’m going to experiment with wp cli to get the databases up and running for each WordPress install.
Getting Established Under AlmaLinux
Over the weekend I donated a small bit of my time to getting the new webserver up and running. I spun up a new Droplet at DigitalOcean with an image of AlmaLinux, and after some trial and error I had a barebones lampstack setup within minutes! Then came setting up the new Mumble server, and tomorrow I might play with getting a wiki up… for fun.
Future Plans For Future Me
Sometime in the not too distant future I will be upgrading my Linux servers, both my webserver and my game servers. I’m currently running all of my servers on CentOS 7, which is getting its support dropped at the end of the year along with CentOS 8. I could upgrade to CentOS Stream, but it updates far too frequently for me to run it as a server distro. So far I’m leaning towards switching to AlmaLinux — I should be able to follow the same procedures used to setup CentOS 8 to get everything back up and running on new builds. I’m prepping to do the webserver first, so if anyone happens to see a blank void where a website once stood, fret not. I will always return in the evening to complain about dependency hell.
Aaaaaaaaaaand the winner is…
I’d like to thank everyone who decided to participate in our poll to determine what my next victim, errr…. video project is going to be! Unfortunately, we seem to be suffering from a three way… tie! Three way tie! Here is what the peepo chose:
- Bayonetta
- Borderlands 2
- Portal 2
All good games on their own merits; but alas… I can only work on one at a time. Does this mean I’ll be making another poll? Nope, we’re taking this one step further. I will be getting together with two other people on an asteroid, each of us will represent each game with the last one standing being declared the winner.
Wish us luck. 😛
It’s Poll O’ Clock!
The poll has returned and it’s bigger than ever! The last time we had a poll it was fun getting all of your feedback! So much in fact that I’m bringing it back with MORE OPTIONS!!!
From now until the 9th of March you can vote for up to five different options! With the limit of one IP per household. No account required etc, etc.

Looking forward to your results!… for science! 😛
Current Mood: Retro-ish
With all of the website tweaking and email server shenanigans I’ve been wrapped up in I haven’t had much time to really play anything lately. I finally managed to play a few games today to take the edge off. I did Okami at lunch on the new laptop, AMID EVIL in the afternoon, and finished off with Quake 3 with Yutram and a bunch of bots. I want to add more content to the main Quake 3 server, and maybe check out some other mods, maps and gamemodes.
By the way; I recently fixed the email server. For some reason I only had outgoing working but managed to science it out with some proper DNS sorting. We’re not on the new one yet, for some reason my ISP and domain don’t seem to be getting along and I think it might have something to do with the recent domain transfer from Bluehost to Network Solutions.
Anyways… you can all email an ear full now if needed (you know who you peeps are).
Update to the comment form
I’ve updated the plugin for the comments section, so it’s a little more swank than before. We now have a rich text editor! Feel free to test it out!
Also, emails are working again! They’re still on the Bluehost side though while the sites remain on Digital Ocean, at least until the email transfer to Spectrum is completed. Slowly but surely I’m understanding how the internet works.
Managing a fire of irons
Now that I have the sites transferred over to digital ocean I can start focusing on getting back into animating. I finished a video over my holiday, but I won’t be publishing it until I finish part 4, only because I don’t want anymore cliffhangers. That said I extracted the audio I intend to animate and hoo-boy… it’s like almost two minutes worth; this’ll take awhile. I’ll be sure to post project pictures in der Discord. I already have stuff in there from a couple past projects. I also built a Discord for The Guild Of Slackers if you’d like to check a look. I’ll get around to finishing it eventually.
Oh, and if you’re having issues reaching me by email I’ve had the webmail servers down… having issues getting those transferred over to our ISP, so if you’re trying to email something to me I won’t be able to get it at the moment. I’ll look into possibly having the bluehost one accessible tomorrow hopefully while I try to get this resolved.
