Catalyst Control Center gets a well deserved overhaul

AMD

If you use AMD GPU’s it’s time to say goodbye to the CCC we’ve been using since the ATi days. They’re renaming their software to “Radeon Software” and each year it will be codenamed with a particular shade of red.

They mention some interesting features, like overclocking the GPU on a per game basis as well as better control over eyefinity display for those who use a multi-monitor display (which naturally caught my attention). Also this software is written on Qt rather than .NET, anther interesting thing to note. I’ll be checking it out in a few weeks when it makes an arrival.

Windows 10 will become a recommended update in 2016

Windows 10 Wallpaper HD

In an attempt for Microsoft to become the new Borg, next year Microsoft will be adding Windows 10 to the recommended list of updates for Windows 10. They have done this recently as a “fluke” but have since moved the goalpost until 2016.

Adding this upgrade to the recommended list will automatically download it to your system if it is capable of running Win 10. It’s a waste of space and bandwidth to do it this way, but Microsoft really wants people to flock into their Garden Of Eden Cortana.

Microsoft’s attempt to make PC Gamers happy

Microsoft is developing a Surface Notebook for gamers!

This low-end, gamer-friendly Surface Book, which includes 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, costs $1,699 (£1,100 or AU$2,350). That’s $200 more than the same model without the GeForce chip. This new version is set for release Monday, the official launch date for all Surface Book models, but is not available for preorder. All other models are showing at least four-week to seven-week waits before shipping, according to Microsoft’s site.

$1,699 for a laptop with an i5 processor? That’s a lot of money for a game of solitaire. Jeez, my laptop didn’t even cost that much and it has an overclockable i7 Haswell in it with a GTX 870m, 16 GB of RAM and 1TB + 256GB for disk space. Somehow I get the feeling they haven’t looked at Asus, MSI and co’s gaming laptops to see what the competition is like.

From SeaMonkey to Firefox to Waterfox with a side of Thunderbird

images.duckduckgo.com

After reading some of the usual tech sites I decided to give Waterfox a try. It’s like Firefox, but it’s 64 bit and has telemetry disabled (unlike Firefox which has been turned back on, sneaky bastards). If you already have Firefox installed it will automatically have all your settings and addons in place. So if you feel like giving it a looking over I highly recommend it. I haven’t had any problems with it so far.

I also decided to look into using Thunderbird for my email, which is really familiar to SeaMonkey’s in browser email client. In fact it imported my emails from SeaMonkey which I thought was awesome. It also comes with a calendar addon which I might be able to make use of. Now I just need to move my old emails over to my new email address since my old one was taken down by Charter Residential, because they’re a bunch of fucking morons…

Want the latest game ready drivers from NVidia? Download their crap to get it.

If you’re running on NVidia hardware you might not like this news.

Nvidia’s “Game Ready Drivers” are GeForce display drivers that have been optimized for new game releases. If you took part in the Star Wars Battlefront beta, for instance, you may have had to install a driver update before it would run. Right now, there are two ways to do so: You can hop into the GeForce Experience software that’s humming away quietly in your Windows taskbar, or you can pop over to Nvidia’s driver download page and snag the latest update directly. But soon, according to PC World, that second option will be a thing of the past.

And if you don’t want to install their program to get the latest drivers you can just wait for their quarterly update to get it. Or you can switch to AMD, they don’t force you to download drivers through their craptr app.

I’m glad I’ve waited on getting the Steam Controller

I’ve been drooling to get my hands on this shiny thing.

steamcontroller

But having read feedback on it so far on the Steam forums, and reading the first big review on it on PC Gamer I’m happy I didn’t go with the bleeding edge. I’m still interested in it though, perhaps after they work out the kinks and add more support to it I’ll pick one up. But for now it looks like Valve has their work cut out for themselves. In the meantime I’ll continue to enjoy my relaxation time with the ol reliable Logitech F710.

My thoughts on Windows 10: Chapter One

I’ve been keeping up on the news regarding Windows 10 and so far I haven’t been really impressed. One of the things I dislike about it is the fact that you can’t turn off Windows Update unless you have the business version of the OS. This could get annoying if you’re writing a document, working on a project, chatting, playing a game etc as there seems to be no way to postpone the process.

Another problem is datacaps and internet connections in rural areas as people are finding out.

Consumer groups have slammed Microsoft for its policy of forced updates for Windows 10, which is hitting customers in remote locations with massive bill shocks by blowing out their data caps.

But they warn bill shock may affect many more customers, regardless of where they are located. And, with many customers yet to receive their monthly internet bills, the full extent of the problem may not yet be apparent.

Maureen Hilyard, an internet user in the Cook Islands, an autonomous region associated with New Zealand, claims she faces a bill as much as $NZ600 ($A532) for the month of August, thanks to Windows 10 automatic updates.

I’ve never even thought about this before. But because of the way Microsoft wants to roll out updates now, it’s pretty much mandatory to have an internet connection and a good one at that. Why? With Linux and older versions of Windows this wasn’t a requirement, and I don’t see how Microsoft can think this will be a good idea. I’ve been having customers ask me about Windows 10 and so far everything that I’ve told them about has made them either stick with older versions of Windows, or contemplate getting a tablet or switching to Mac, and in semi-rare cases consider Linux.

I remember when they rolled out the XBox One it was supposed to be an online 24/7 console, and if you lost the internet connection you wouldn’t be able to play any of your games. I also remember they got enough flak for that decision. Microsoft has to get it together and realize that yes we have the technology and the internet connections to pull this off, but people don’t always have the access or the money to make it work.

Upgrade status

My laptop arrived yesterday! The moment I got off work I went home, sat down for a moment and took to my old and new laptop with a couple screw drivers (not the ones with orange juice and vodka, although that could have been interesting). I installed one of my 1 TB drives and the SSD for my OS. So far everything has been humming along with no issues. Installed Windows 7 with all the drivers and updates. Tonight I finished installing most of the important softwares, and copied some games over. I’ll probably do some tests with it tomorrow. I’ve burnt most of the midnight oil, and I have some things to take care of before work which requires me to get to bed a bit earlier than usual. Either way, next time I have a long lunch at work I’ll have this thing happily at my side.

I also got my Linux install on my main desktop working the way I want it. I decided to experiment with Mate desktop because while I like xfce, it’s a slight pain when it comes to dual monitor setups. Mate is basically a less graphically intense version of Classic GNOME, and it handles 3D games just as well as xfce. The less going on in the background the better the framerate, especially in FPS games.

Might have to do some serious gaming when I get home. I can tell I’ve been busy with my upgrades lately, my Steam hours have dropped quite a bit. 😀

Yesterday was a good day.

Woke up yesterday to an auction for a laptop, unfortunately I lost… Decided to shake it off and wander into town to do some errands. It was nice n’ sunny at least. Finally scheduled a hair appointment at a new place, hopefully it goes well next week. Also made a deposit then went out for some sushi that I owed myself. It was called The Samurai and it had cucumber, some tempura prawns and it was topped with crab and a spicy teriyaki sriracha sauce.

Then I came home and backed off the rest of my files so I could prepare for the new motherboard. So far it’s been pretty smooth, other than the front USB ports are acting strangely. I’m hoping it’s some driver issue. I still have a bunch to install. I’ve only covered the Win 7 install, some drivers and other refinements. I still have plenty of programs and organization to take care of, then I can install Fedora 21 and get that setup. I’ll probably be distracted for awhile. Not only with that, but with an auction I actually won tonight. 😛 I’m going to be the proud owner of an ROG G750JS-TS71. I also ordered a Samsung 256 GB SSD, and hopefully I can find a regular 2 TB drive later on for the 2nd drive bay. In the meantime I’ll rough it on the 1 TB.

So all in all I had a very relaxing day off, probably one of the better ones I’ve had lately. Oh, and I saw the new chatroom a certain someone made in Mumble… All I have to say was that I got more done on my mask today. One more coating or two and I can add some straps for my face.

I’m gonna go try to not dream about things relating to that set of stuffs.

Apple competes with Google to see who can outcreep who.

First Google had to be the ones to set the bar when they started targeting people with special ads in gmail. Now, being as innovative as Apple can be, they’re rolling out this.

Just when you thought Apple wasn’t integrated into your life enough, the company just won a patent for a system that targets ads based on how much money people have. This is the same Apple that’s promised not to monetize your data. As Tim Cook said last year: “You’re not our product.” Until you are, apparently.

Heh, next thing you’ll know they’ll be copying spotify…

Oh, right.
