Program Chatter

Got into a random conversation with a co-worker today about Adobe products, and how the creative landscape has shifted over the last decade. I remember when Adobe was the king of video editing, but now with so many other options it doesn’t make sense to buy Creative Cloud anymore and their monthly subscription service. He has a subscription and even he was questioning why. I told him the only Adobe tool left in my arsenal is After Effects, and even then I’ll eventually try to learn the compositing side of Blender.

There was once a time when I would go between Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects and Audition. Now it’s Krita, Shotcut/KdenLive, Audacity and every once in awhile After Effects. Now if they could implement HDR video editing into one of these Open Source programs that would be metal af.

Remaining On Target For October

I don’t want to break my arm to pat my own back, but… I got a lot done with the video today! I got the SFMย  animations finished, and I’ve got everything in place for some work in After Effects tomorrow. After that comes assembly, and of course scheduling a time to record voice lines. I will need to go back into SFM to re-render something with a greenscreen, but that won’t take too long… or at least it shouldn’t. I’m still kind of surprised that I’ve moved through this so quickly. Rendered two things, compiled them in Shotcut, and ready to process in After Effects. It’s amazing what a little practice can do!

Bringing My Nightmares To Life One Frame At A Time

Finished rendering this just a bit ago. Tomorrow I’ll start animating one more scene, and then I can finally look at wrapping this project up! … or at least Part 1. ๐Ÿ˜› The last bit of animation will probably take me a few weeks to complete, then maybe I can take a break and work on a sideproject before continuing onto the next Bayonetta vid.

I Can Finally Share Something

You wouldn’t know this was for a Bayonetta livestream recap… or wtf is even going on

I did some re-rendering in Shotcut today to pre-render certain elements into the hologram (text and some other filters) to save time and resources while working in AE. I’ll continue work on it in a day or two…

It’s been a long day, and I’m in need of a little R&R.

Stage 3 Is Go!

I had to re-render those scenes from last night due to using an incorrect framerate, so my time in After Effects was a little limited this evening. I did get things prepped in After Effects though, so there is that. As much as I would like to share a picture it’s still a little too barebones for me to want to share it just yet, and I still need to get used to using it again. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to use anything from Adobe… it feels weird.

Adobe narrows their OS scope

This is one of the reasons why I don’t like subscription model software:

We want to give you advance notice that upcoming versions of the Adobe video and audio tools will require Windows 10 (version 1709, or higher) or macOS 10.12 (or higher) to run. This applies to the next major releases of Adobe Media Encoder, After Effects, Audition, Character Animator, Prelude, and Premiere Pro.

Performance and stability are top priorities for all of our users. Running our apps on current versions of the Mac and Windows operating systems helps provide an optimal experience with our tools.

So basically if you’re on an older operating system and you still want to use Adobe CC Services you’ll have to pay a monthly fee for out of date software… Not that it matters to me. There are other pay and Open Source options that will do the trick in most cases, especially if you’re looking for encoders and video editors. This isn’t the early 90’s/mid 2000’s where Adobe was king, programs like Shotcut, Sony Vegas, and a few others are good substitutes. In fact I’ve been using Shotcut for over a year now, and only had to delve into Premiere Pro once to keyframe something (though I used CS6 instead of CC). All that I really use that’s adobe these days is Photoshop CS6, which will probably be my last version.

An entire day of editing cardboard box porn

I’ve been going over video footage I’ve accumulated over the last week, and surprisingly I have quite a bit to share. I’ve been dividing it all up into small videos of course, it feels weird to actually have footage in the can so to speak, if only I had more time for this sort of thing.

I did commit a sin tonight though, for almost an entire year I’ve only used Shotcut for my videos as that offers the ability to edit my OBS recordings along with their individual audio tracks, while newer versions of Adobe can handle this I don’t think it’s worth it to me to pay a monthly fee when I can achieve what I want out of an Open Source program. But tonight I had to take one of my clips into Premiere Pro to do some keyframe work, something Shotcut lacks at present. I also had to use it to loop an animated gif into another format as Shotcut kept having a stroke whenever I tried to import it. So I guess ye olde CS6 still serves a purpose… although Shotcut has been kicking all kinds of ass when it comes to video editing options, filters, multi-platform support and a thriving community.

I definitely recommend Shotcut if you’re looking for a video editor on the cheap, or an excellent Open Source competitor that runs on Linux, which Adobe doesn’t. ๐Ÿ˜›

Adobe for rent, not for sale.

Looks like Adobe has jumped on the cloud bandwagon. They want you to pay a subscription fee to use their software, instead of just buying it and keeping it for yourself. Wonder how long this will take to pirate…

Plans vary according to which programs you use routinely and whether youโ€™re upgrading from an old-fashioned licensed version of Creative Suite, but full-suite prices range from $20 per month for teachers and students to $60 a month for members of teams that also need large amounts of shared cloud storage.

I’ll keep my CS5 thanks.

So old that it’s free: Adobe CS2 Suite

If you can’t pirate afford CS6 you can now download CS2 legally.

CS2 was what I worked with before jumping to CS5. Photoshop and Premiere Pro are still great to use under CS2, the only downside is the lack of current codecs for Premiere Pro. So if you’re interested in trying out either Video editing, audio mixing, photoshop, or anything else that tickles your fancy, you can give it a fair try. ๐Ÿ™‚

Word to the wise though if you use Premiere: Save frequently. Adobe likes to crash constantly.
