A Day In The Half Life

I’m adding Half Life to the list of games I’d like to finish between systems. I installed it on my Steam Deck and as expected, it works perfectly. I also played it on Desktop tonight. Even at 4K it has a certain charm about it that I can’t quite describe. My only problem with some of these older games is the eye strain I get after awhile…

Half Life GoldSrc At 144hz And Above!

If you ever want to play this on 120hz and up you just need to do the following:

  1. Go to Steam and right click on Half Life
  2. Click Properties
  3. Click on Local Files
  4. Click on Browse…
  5. Double click on the Valve folder and open config.cfg
  6. Go to Edit>Find and type in fps_max, then press “Find Next”
  7. Change the value from 100.0 to match desired refresh rate

I did read that upping the max framerate can cause strange side effects in the game engine, so proceed with caution (and a camera in case hilarity ensues).

Can We Make Half Life VR Canon?

These new Half Life VR videos have been making me think back to the old Gmod meme days. My current fave is Half Life VR but the AI is self aware:

I’m trying not to spoil myself too much. I want to have a weekend with some cinema time with this and maybe a few other things. It’s been awhile since the we’ve had a cinema day.

The safest version of self harm

I’m the kind of person that is willing to even try a game that is slightly less than passable for a game just to see what kind of train wreck I’m getting myself into. I figured I hadn’t touched Counter-Strike: Condition Zeroes Deleted Scenes in a good while, and figured I’d forced my ass forward… I died and woke up in another game.

You can interact with just about anything in the map, but there are no npc’s around to talk to you or berate you when you decide to fuck with the main computer behind the counter. Trying to go into the next level will crash the game, and it seems to happen every time my character dies. The lack of other people in the map almost gives it an unsettling vibe, as though everyone was mysteriously teleported away via the resonance cascade without a trace. I would almost expect the narrator from The Stanley Parable to step forward and narrate this accident.

I’m not entirely sure how to feel about this game… When CS:CZ originally came out I didn’t know of its existence, but apparently it went through quite a bit of development hell according to Wikipedia. I recently found some early beta versions, and now I’m contemplating checking them out. I always like looking at early concepts for games, it gives you a look into the development and creative processes that go into creating a game. I think I liked the earlier concepts better than the more linear final version.

In tonight’s episode: The part of Gordon Freeman will be played by Spyro The Dragon

It’s comforting to know that if I ever can’t make up my mind on playing Spyro The Dragon or Half Life we can now have the best of both worlds thanks to a mod:

I watched the video, and for the most part they did a good job getting the game mechanics from the original Spyro down to a T. Magic Nipples (the creator of the mod) will be releasing it on October 26th. I might have to install this and give it a go.

Half Life Source: Hemorrhoids Edition

Played a bit of Half Life Source today. I only ever played the tutorial level and wanted to see how the rest of it compares to the original GoldSource version. Here it is in all its glory:

It also seems I wasn’t the only one, as a friend of mine took a similar screenshot many moons ago. :assy: Guess some things don’t change.

New Week Open Thread

So once again I wasn’t able to publish any vlogs, one due to a short lunch one day and another day for chilling with some people persons during a longer one. I’m hoping if I’m not overly tired this week I’ll release a vid.

I spent the day doing a little bit of cleaning, bedding needed to be done and the floor needed a good brushing. I was also up for a bit of old school Half-Life (Gold Source). A game I’ve never finished, mostly because during that era I was too glued to Tomb Raider, Quake and Doom games. I’m just a bit passed my first confrontation with the soldiers. They don’t like me very much. 😛

Oh Gaben, you’re such a tease.

Gabe Newell decided to troll about Half Life 3/Half Life 2 Episode 3 or whatever the hell it’s being called at this point.

“But you know if you want to do another Half-Life game and you want to ignore everything we’ve learned in shipping Portal 2 and in shipping all the updates on the multiplayer side, that seems like a bad choice,” Newell continued. “So we’ll keep moving forward. But that doesn’t necessarily always mean what people are worried that it might mean.”

Make of that what you will. It could either mean that the franchise is gone due to no multiplayer, or the next Half Life will be multiplayer specific. Who knows? The Gaben works in mysterious ways and for the most part, many gamers have benefited from what Valve has done thus far.

Either way until then, HL3 unconfirmed.
