The Controllerpocalypse

On the subject of Controllers lately, I’ve rounded up this collection:

Controllers

Surprisingly they all work. Even the mutant one with the too many buttons. The two Saiteks in the picture were not very memorable; then again in the 90’s and early 00’s controllers on PC were going through that awkward phase still.

The Playstation controllers still work, one of these days if I ever felt like playing an emulator I might get the proper adapters. Or just setup the old PS1. I always liked the way the Playstation Controllers felt, which was why I would really enjoy the Logitechs later on which are basically a lovechild of Playstation’s Dualshock with the XBox’s buttons. Then we have the Steam Controller; which has been pretty cool so far.

Evening Open Thread

Next week I start my new line of work. To celebrate my promotion I decided to buy myself a Steam Controller. I’m estimated to get it by December 10th, so it’ll be a nice early Christmas present to myself. Oh god, I have to think about Christmas… and surviving Black Friday. Fuck. Thanksgiving is somewhere in there too.

Speaking of new devices I also decided to order a new gaming mouse. Mine is starting to show it’s age by randomly double clicking on it’s own. So I decided to grab one of these.

I already have it’s wireless cousin the G602, which I use between my laptop and the HTPC. I like the overall feel of it. Plus it has extra macro buttons. So I’m looking forward to test driving it. 😀

More new toys

I finally got my hands on a wireless keyboard so that I can type from within bed. This makes it a bit more seamless when moving from the desktop to the living room/bed/wherever I want to go… maybe the bathroom? 😛

My choice is the Logitech K830. It has a built in trackpad and illuminated keys. It lacks a numpad but that’s not really necessary to me. I just want something to control things from afar because, you know… I’m an Overlord? I have to have full control from everywhere…

It also has some built in hotkeys so that you can change your multi-monitor setup, do a file search, play, start and stop music, and more. All of this works out of the box without any additional software, although you can install Logitech’s Options Software so you can personalize it (which I haven’t yet).

So far it’s been working quite nicely. I curled up with it and my wireless controller and tackled a game I haven’t played yet called Freedom Planet. Which I’ll go into further detail in another future post.

So now my nerd setup is finally complete! Well… Until I decide otherwise.

All of the gaming.

Over vacation I decided to show my brother the awesomeness that is Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition. We both played using my logitech controllers on the HTPC. After that I’ve been looking at my collection to see what other things can be done with two people in the living room. So far I’ve mainly found fighting games to be the best for us. Multiplayer FPS doesn’t really work on one keyboard, and fuck doing that with a controller. Portal 2 is still kind of wonky between two controllers let alone a keyboard and a controller from what I can tell. I still need to test Octodad, Lara Croft and the guardian of light, both audiosurfs and anything else that stands out in my collection.

Oh and speaking of controllers I recently got a Logitech F510. It’s basically a hybrid of the F310 and F710, it’s wired but also has a dualshock motor in it. I gave my brother the F310 since I don’t really need 3 controllers. 😛 Plus he’s interested in getting a copy of Mortal Kombat for himself anyway.

Right now I’m updating my gaming laptop so that I can start off lunch tomorrow with a bang (ha ha ha! bang!). Guess I’ll also have to think of what to actually bring to lunch.
