We’ve Destroyed Machines Beyond Counting

It’s been awhile since I’ve played NieR Automata. I took a break during my 9S playthrough to play through Replicant when it came out. I’m glad I did, while not a requirement to it does make it easier to spot references in the overall story. Now might be a good time for me to get back into it; the modding community has been adding some fun stuff:

I visited the nexus and found quite a few things that I’ll have to add once I (someday) finish my first playthrough! They’ve added a couple new areas, a bunch of model replacements for weapons, outfits and models. With the right amount of mods I might consider doing a livestream with it! But for now it was fun to hack n slash tonight, and since I’m currently playing as 9S it’s more like hack n slash, and just hacking… I don’t mind playing as 9S, but the hacking games get really repetitive really quickly.

Having A Bloody Good Time

After a long week of work I just haaaaad to break down and lost myself once more in the world of NieR Replicant. I completed a few sidequests, found a few more, and got my ass beaten by a giant shade to the point of putting the controller down and saying “fuck it”.

I’ll probably shelve it for now. I wanted to pick something else out from my library tomorrow, or possibly focus on my digital empire. :v

Saturday Night Open Thread

Just a couple nights ago I did a 4K recording test of NieR Replicant, all the while doing a private livestream of it to a couple friends just to see if I could make my computer explode. I’m quite happy to say that the magic smoke didn’t escape! I’ve really been hooked on this game, even played a bit more tonight! I’m thinking I’ll try and take a break from it this weekend, maybe play something else in my ever expanding library. I’ll pretty much have the place to myself tomorrow, that might mean taking over the couch to do some big screen playtime!

I’ve Done Some Growing Up

Played through more NieR Replicant today. Played through a bunch of quests, advanced on the main story and become the only character to age in game. In five game years time I’ve gone from being a young sword wielding child, to a young androgynous albino Raiden clone. I can already tell that I’m going to need to do a second playthrough of this… I’ve already missed some quests that I can’t go back to… not to mention there are some multi-choices I’d like to revisit. Games like these are practically designed to be replayed, which makes up for the lack of mods.

NieR has it’s share of silliness like quite a few other JRPG games, but when it gets serious it really gets serious when it tugs at the heart strings. There was a character I remembered seeing from NieR Automata called Emil, and he actually dates back to NieR (or NieR Replicant in this case). When you first encounter him he’s a young boy in NieR, and for some weird reason he remains so after you become a man… at least until you go on a quest where his body undergoes some changes — just as his sister did:

Emil allows himself to be eaten by his sister to obtain control of her powers, all in the pursuit to control his petrification ability so they can thaw out Kaine. Unfortunately, the pursuit of this knowledge lead to him looking like a smaller version of his sister.

I really like the characters, they’re all very well written. I think my fave out of all of them though has to be Kaine:

It’s rare to find a character that shares the same vocabulary as you.
