Could Krita Be My Photoshop Replacement?

I’ve been striving for years to use more Open Source programs when applicable, especially when it comes to production purposes. I was happy when I could happily say that I no longer needed to install Premiere Pro when I stumbled onto Shotcut as a worthy free and Open Source alternative. Now I think I’ve possibly found an alternative for my Photoshopping needs.

From Krita’s Website

I’ve been bouncing back and forth between GIMP and Krita for a number of years now, and I could never really get used to GIMP, and I preferred Krita in terms of layout and additional options that are very similar to Photoshop IMO (and in some cases even better). I’ve been using it for basic image resizing, playing with filter options, and tonight I did some slight retexturing to a model in SFM. I’ve also been meaning to set aside time to try playing around with Krita and my Wacom tablet. Linux has support for Wacom drawing peripherals, and Krita seems to have a good target focus on drawing; they even have options for comic panels!

Even when I’m in Windows I’m using it Krita in place of Adobe. In fact; under Windows I don’t even have Photoshop installed; kinda funny considering I have CS5 installed and working under Manjaro. I highly recommend checking it out if you’re looking for an Open Source alternative, or if you want to ween yourself off of Adobe’s overrated swag.

Evening Open Thread

Nothing to really write about tonight. I’ve been doing some SFM and photoshop work the past week in my spare time, and unfortunately I don’t have anything to really produce visually at this time, however if you’ve seen my real world metal jaw mask you might have a rough idea. :melon:  I’m currently working on the ending for the third Skyrim video which is going to take some time.. I’m animating a little over two minutes worth for the ending, and that shit takes awhile when this is only a hobby.

The weather is going to suck again this weekend. I’ll probably have a cozy introverted couple of days… I think I’ve earned it after the last few weekends not quite panning out as planned. I’m thinking of doing something creative tomorrow, but not quite sure what… I think I’ll take a hint from the two accidental naps that I’ve had and get a full night’s sleep before I let my brain think of anything else.

Until then… Open Thread!

Adobe narrows their OS scope

This is one of the reasons why I don’t like subscription model software:

We want to give you advance notice that upcoming versions of the Adobe video and audio tools will require Windows 10 (version 1709, or higher) or macOS 10.12 (or higher) to run. This applies to the next major releases of Adobe Media Encoder, After Effects, Audition, Character Animator, Prelude, and Premiere Pro.

Performance and stability are top priorities for all of our users. Running our apps on current versions of the Mac and Windows operating systems helps provide an optimal experience with our tools.

So basically if you’re on an older operating system and you still want to use Adobe CC Services you’ll have to pay a monthly fee for out of date software… Not that it matters to me. There are other pay and Open Source options that will do the trick in most cases, especially if you’re looking for encoders and video editors. This isn’t the early 90’s/mid 2000’s where Adobe was king, programs like Shotcut, Sony Vegas, and a few others are good substitutes. In fact I’ve been using Shotcut for over a year now, and only had to delve into Premiere Pro once to keyframe something (though I used CS6 instead of CC). All that I really use that’s adobe these days is Photoshop CS6, which will probably be my last version.
