Valve speaks out about the Winter Sale breach

Dear Steam User,

As you may know, for a brief period on December 25th, a configuration error resulted in some Steam users seeing incorrectly cached Steam Store pages generated for other Steam users. If you are not familiar with the issue, an overview of what happened is available at http://store.steampowered.com/news/19852/.

If you accessed the Steam Store between 11:50 PST and 13:20 PST on December 25th, your account could have been affected by this issue. If you did not use the Steam Store during that time, your account was not affected.

Between the times above, a requested web page for information about your Steam account may have been incorrectly displayed to another Steam user in your local area. This page may have included your email address, country, purchase history and last 4 digits of your phone number if one was associated with your account. It may have also included the last two digits of a credit card number or a PayPal email address, if previously saved for future purchases. It did not include full credit card numbers, Steam account passwords, or other information that would allow another user to complete a transaction with your billing information.

We are contacting you because an IP address previously used by your account to access Steam made a web page request as described above. Because IP addresses are commonly shared for home networks, mobile devices and by internet providers, we are unable to verify that your account was actually the one that made this request. For example one affected IP address was previously used by over 1,700 Steam accounts. Consequently we are notifying all users who have previously used this IP address.

This event did not make it possible to compromise your Steam account or make a fraudulent transaction from your account, but we want you to be aware of what information could have been seen by another Steam user.

We’re sorry this happened and have taken steps to prevent this problem from occurring in the future.

I posted my Steam Controller review the other day via Steam (What a shocker). In case anyone didn’t see it I’ve decided to put a link to it here. Surprisingly I was 99% serious in my review. But considering a broken clock is right twice a day I guess it was bound to happen. Here’s the the review.

Well, Valve and Bethesda finally decided to revert workshop back to the way it was.

Update: After discussion with Valve, and listening to our community, paid mods are being removed from Steam Workshop. Even though we had the best intentions, the feedback has been clear – this is not a feature you want. Your support means everything to us, and we hear you.

So that’s it. Things go back to the way they are. At least for this particular game. Valve might still do the same thing with their games… I just hope that if any company or indie in the future thinks twice about implementing that type of system. Like I said before, I’m all for people making money on something they love doing, but in the end it all comes down to how you present it. This wasn’t presented very well in the slightest.

The workshop controversy continued.

Lets see… So far since the update to Skyrim Steam workshop we’ve had someone with a paid mod remove their creation from the workshop because it was using assets from another mod, the discussion forums for skyrim have been on fire, a petition is out to remove the latest changes to the workshop, and with no surprise Garry has come out in support of the whole thing and plans to do the same thing with Garry’s Mod.

This makes me laugh considering we were joking last night about how 12 year olds would probably try to sell their dupes on the workshop for easy cash. :v But in all seriousness paid mods in the gmodverse would be a nightmare. I’m constantly testing new addons when either the servers or the mods themselves update to make sure everything goes smoothly, and sometimes I end up having to remove things to prevent conflicts.

People are saying that it’s a rocky start, but could be better in the long term as modders would have incentive to create some very impressive works. But I’m not so sure.

Pay to play mods for skyrim?

Steam updated their steam workshop to allow modders the option of making money off of their community contributions. So far this only seems to involve skyrim. But other games could soon follow. I’m not exactly sure if I’m on board with the idea.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great if you could get paid doing what you love. But I see this as a system that could be abused, or the devs just gave up. What if a mod doesn’t work correctly with another mod after the 24 hour period you’re allowed to request a refund? What if it breaks and the creator declares it abandoned? People have also been pulling their mods from the skyrim nexus and putting them up on workshop to make money off of other peoples work.

I dread to think what will happen when/if this system is implemented into other workshop games. Especially in games that have tons and tons of addons that don’t always work together.

Gabe Newell decided to troll about Half Life 3/Half Life 2 Episode 3 or whatever the hell it’s being called at this point.

“But you know if you want to do another Half-Life game and you want to ignore everything we’ve learned in shipping Portal 2 and in shipping all the updates on the multiplayer side, that seems like a bad choice,” Newell continued. “So we’ll keep moving forward. But that doesn’t necessarily always mean what people are worried that it might mean.”

Make of that what you will. It could either mean that the franchise is gone due to no multiplayer, or the next Half Life will be multiplayer specific. Who knows? The Gaben works in mysterious ways and for the most part, many gamers have benefited from what Valve has done thus far.

Either way until then, HL3 unconfirmed.

A serious problem under Linux regarding Steam

A friend of mine shared this with me yesterday. PC World even picked up on the story.

If you’re a Steam fan running Linux, the last thing you’ll want to do in the next few days is mess with your Steam files. Users on Valve’s GitHub Steam for Linux page are complaining about a nasty bug that has the potential to wipe out every single personal file on your PC. Even worse, users say the bug will even wipe out documents on USB connected drives. So much for local backups.

That’s a pretty serious bug. I hope Valve gets on that ASAP.

Steam allows you to stream games now.

Woke up to a bunch of people on my friends list talking about the new Steam Broadcasting feature that allows you to stream your gameplay. So I spent a good portion of the evening streaming various games. It seems to work with Direct X and OpenGL, but sadly no MSDOS.

This is currently in the steam client beta if anyone wants to check it out. To my knowledge it works on Windows 7 and 8. If you’re on Windows Vista it’s not available, and I’m not sure about Linux and Mac but they’re probably not supported either for this beta.

So, looks like I might have to look into doing some streaming for myself. 🙂 Then you can see how horrible I am. 😛
