Here’s a little video. I have another one with animations that’ll be released on the weekend. :melon: I have a couple teaser pics in the Tomala Fanclub Chat and a little Discord server I put together for anyone interested.
Taken from my DOSBox Livestream. The commentary has been stripped from the video for those who wish to enjoy this old screen saver in its original form.
We traveled back in time to an era where the internet was close to being a thing, the start menu hadn’t been invented yet, and people didn’t have smartphones to distract themselves with while driving. I had fun showing off a really old install of Windows with some After Dark screensavers. I kinda wish these would make a comeback, it was always fun to have something silly to look at in the background.
I laid out my virus prank this morning, and had interesting results. He wasn’t afraid of it, in fact it seems he wanted the hard drive to be wiped. He was bummed when I showed him that Windows was still available… and then I loaded Windows 3.11 and that still didn’t really phase him. It wasn’t until I pulled out Norton Commander that I began to hear terror in his voice.
He questioned what the purpose of said program served, and I had a fun time trying to tell him that in the old days this was a good program to do file transfers either between drives and floppies, or networking two computers together. Back in the early days of computing Windows didn’t quite take off yet, so it was either this or manually typing in each command to complete particular tasks. NC was also awesome for making a custom launch menu. I remember using this when I was younger to launch DOS games; it was this and Windows 3.1 (and eventually 3.11) that I switched between whenever I wanted to play something. You know, have to have my Skifree fix. :v:
On another note I also wore a poncho and a sombrero to work today on a dare; same co-worker said if I did so he’d give me a free lunch… I don’t think he remembered. I’ll have to remind him next time we work together. 😛
Today I celebrated pulling a prank on my co-workers by bringing in a USB key with DOSBox running Windows 3.11 running in fullscreen mode, in an attempt to freak out some of my younger co-workers. 😛 I left it plugged in since I do have to head back in tomorrow, but damn… I wish I could be there to see the looks on their faces when they try to find the start menu. 😛
Those of us who did use the older Windows actually had a good laugh at the old After Dark screensavers I had running. Every time we were near the system we’d change it from one to another. Flying Toasters, DOS Shell, Bad Dog, and Rat Race were favorites. Especially Rat Race, we set the rats to be as stupid as possible to make the race last a super long time. Here’s a short video that has all kinds of After Dark screensavers. Quite a few I never even saw before!
I hear you can get 4.0 to run on Windows 7 with a little bit of hacking… might have to look into that.
This guy did a tutorial on how to make and upload a YouTube video all within Windows 3.1. I’ll never do it myself, but it’s impressive to see how backwards comparable an old OS can be with just a bit of imagination. 😀
