Diary of a PC nerd.

Picked up the laptop from work tonight. It’s an old IBM thinkpad with 512 MB of RAM and running an old Intel P4 1.8 processor. Not bad for an internet appliance. Turns out it was running XP Pro SP1 so he was in better shape than I imagined. He had one of those run of the mill programs that posed as an antivirus program that wanted you to upgrade to the full version to remove infections from the system. For some reason renaming the executable to shit.shit made it die. The bastards were sneaky too. He complained that whenever he went to start any web browser it would go to that site. It turns out it wrote hooks into the registry to load that webpage whenever Firefox or Internet Exploder started. Sneaky bastards…

5 total infections on the system. Malwarebytes cleaned that up with no trouble at all. I still have a ways to go on it but will save that for tomorrow. I have to get a hold of him and tell him how much I’ll be charging. This’ll be one case where I won’t go into work if I get called in. I’ll be too busy working on that system.

Speaking of computer problems. My L4D1 dedicated server seems to be acting strange as of late. I’ve been adding new maps and it won’t let me connect with a lobby if I use them. But if I load the default maps or even ones that have been sitting on the server that I’ve played before it lets me connect via lobby tomorrow. If I have time I may have to look into that as well. I’ve tried twice within the last few nights to play some new campaigns so I can film them for Season 2 of You Can’t Do That On XBox and am getting rather annoyed.

Hand me a wrench! I’ll wang on those fuckers.

Super Sentai Project Day.

Today was mega project today. I released Run Of The Witches, a short with some L4D2 witches and hax. Worked on the new SNews site. Edited a template for next weeks YCDTOXB and even made some pad thai. I even tried something new and added baked Thai style tofu. Tasted pretty good surprisingly.

Tomorrows goals after work are to finish rendering the intro (this one is packed with so much stuff that it takes about 12 hours) and look into flud width templates and moving picture banners for the new SNews site because the current one is fixed width and while it will do the job for now, it doesn’t look right on widescreen. Plus the YouTube boxes are too small IMO.

In other news my power supply decided to turn to shit after 2 hours of running it. It began vibrating the case. This is getting annoying…

Learn something new everyday.

So I’ve been planning on making some shirt decals for ironing on my stuff and remembered hey! I have an old bubblejet printer collecting dust. I kept cleaning the printer head over and over again and eventually went to plug it into my system to do a test print only to find that where the port goes on this motherboard is actually a vent for the northbridge…

Good thing there is a print server in the living room I can plug it into. As it is the printer itself is 16 years old, so if I can use the last of the ink for it I can just continue to use the HP printer in the living room via the network, or just invest in my own USB powered printer. I hear they’re pretty cheap for a good one.

Meanwhile, in the digital realm.

Well, the good news is that the server updates weren’t the problem (regarding the dedicated servers randomly dying). It turns out to be one of the network cards in the server itself. Luckily we had a spare in there or we’d be up shit creek without a paddle. Will be looking into getting a spare in the meantime.

Still on the topic of dedicated servers I’m also looking into webhosting so that I can mirror TF2 mp3’s (among other things) to make logging into the server faster for everyone. Ever since I installed the endround music mod I’ve noticed that we have been chewing up a healthy amount of bandwidth.

Oh, and tonight I finally finished my review of “The Woods”. This episode will be even shorter than the last one. But don’t worry, it won’t be boring…

Looks like I got to do neither

Came home only to discover that after the latest TF2 server update the servers will do a mega crash. For some reason the latest TF2/HL2DM update randomly kills the network card on the server. I’m not sure why it is doing this but I know it didn’t before the update.

Right now I’m only leaving the L4D1 server up since I know that had no updates. If the network card hasn’t been killed by the time I wake up later I’ll do some TF2 testing.

What a great way to start my 3 day weekend…
