Steam Deck Sunday: Legend of Kay Anniversary

Once upon a time, I started a game called Legend of Kay Anniversary – and like many other games before and after it, I never got around to finishing it. Today was the day that changed, and it was all thanks to some hot weather and a Steam Deck. It isn’t Verified for the Steam Deck, in fact at the time of writing this it is currently listed as unsupported. But I can confirm that it runs like native via Proton, and it was playable on battery for about 4 hours. It’s perfect on the SD Card!

Legend of Kay Anniversary is a remaster of an old Playstation 2 game about a young cat boy named Kay, who lives in a village that is slowly being taken over by Rats and Gorillas. If you ever go to play this, – you have to keep in mind that this is a game from 2005. It’s the combat is going to be clunky, and the voice acting has no qualms about going from corny to terrible. Once you get past that, it actually has a nice charm to it.

I’m three chapters in so far, and gained several achievements by the time evening fell. So far I’m satisfied with my progress. I’m sure I’ll be back to helping some Wabbits next time I pop in to play!

Hard as Hades

Made it out of Tartarus during lunch, and got knocked back into the House of Hades when I got home. On the brightside I did make it farther this time! I used the sword. Each time I die I always try some other weapon; so far my faves are the sword and the bow. I hear the shield can do a lot of damage, but my first playthrough with it didn’t go as well as it did with the other weapons. I also recently unlocked a spear, maybe I’ll try that for my next playthrough?

Shadow Warrior 3: Take 2

Dipped my toes into Shadow Warrior 3. My last taste of the game was a bit soured, having come from two previous games that gave you more weapon options and sword movement; but damn… don’t those cutscenes look nice??

As simplistic as the gameplay has become compared to previous installments; I did have fun playing with different explosives found within the variety of demons I laid to slaughter. I also obtained a drill gun from one of the demons, that was pretty cool. They also brought back one of my fave characters from the 2012 reboot! His lines and enthusiasm actually make me want to come back to this again, or maybe even return to the 2012 game to do a little achievement hunting!

I’m still a little mixed overall, but at least on this run I did find some positives. Maybe I’ll find more on my next session. 🙂

Tears of Gaming

Spent some time in Crystar tonight, as part of the remainder of my weekend self care! I finished a couple more chapters, gained a new friend, and learned a bit about some of the souls I’ve been killing. All in all? A productive evening I’d say.

I have to admit, I do like the shining visuals of the labyrinth that is this universes purgatory. I wish I could say more about the combat… Crystar’s combat system very clunky, and leaves a bit to be desired. The fighting gets a bit repetitive; you spawn into purgatory, destroy lost souls and wander finding lost memories until you find the exit and finish your mission. I’m glad they at least gave me an extra character to help add a little variety.

Her name is Kokoro. I teamed up with her, she has some amazing fisting abilities. The voice acting in this game ranges from Ok to B Grade Anime voice acting. I’m thinking next time I play to see if I can load the Japanese vocals instead, just to see how well they compare to English… when I feel the in the mood to play again. :v

Shadow Warrior 3: First Impressions

A couple of sales ago, I decided to take the plunge on Shadow Warrior 3, and am I ever glad that I did!… I’m almost an hour in, so I can’t fully judge the game just yet, but what I’ve played and witnessed so far has been a real downgrade from the other two. The gameplay has been oversimplified compared to its predecessors; gone are the days of pressing certain buttons to perform sword techniques, your blade has been banished to your right mouse button!

For Shadow Warrior 3 the developers switched from their in house Flying Wild Hog Engine to Unreal Engine 4, and while it doesn’t look terrible it does seem to lack the detail that the previous games had. Gameplay also seems to have more of a classic linear approach… kind of underwhelming when you’ve played the previous installments. There is also more cutscene than the other two games combined, though they do at least look nice… I would of happily traded them in for the combat system from the previous games though. This installment in the series is giving me Serious Sam 2 vibes.

From what I’ve read it takes about 7 hours to complete the game, so I’ll be sure to take it slow as I do with most of my library. 😛 Maybe I’ll warm up to the game after a little more play time? I’ll write more about it as I progress. So far I’m not really feeling it, hopefully it picks up.

Of Heaven and Hell

It was another nice summer day that passed through. I woke up and enjoyed a Mediterranean quinoa bowl and picked up Hades for the first time in ages. I installed it onto the Steam Deck today, and as expected it runs to perfection. So far I’ve bit the dust 10 times, petted three headed doggo enough for an achievement, and cleared Tartarus… only to die and begin again once more. 😛

I did get to cycle some of the weapons. Played with the shield, a spear, played with the bow for a bit. For not having touched this one in awhile I think I did ok; I advanced the plot, made myself a bit stronger, enjoyed stabbing things, among other things.

Then later on in the day, when it started to cool I went to Heaven to get some Neon White Achievements and grab as many gifts as I could find. Did really well getting the Ace Medals, someday if I’m brave enough I’ll start going for the Dev Medals. They can only be obtained if you beat a level under a game dev’s completion time. I think I already have one that I got by accident.

We’ve Destroyed Machines Beyond Counting

It’s been awhile since I’ve played NieR Automata. I took a break during my 9S playthrough to play through Replicant when it came out. I’m glad I did, while not a requirement to it does make it easier to spot references in the overall story. Now might be a good time for me to get back into it; the modding community has been adding some fun stuff:

I visited the nexus and found quite a few things that I’ll have to add once I (someday) finish my first playthrough! They’ve added a couple new areas, a bunch of model replacements for weapons, outfits and models. With the right amount of mods I might consider doing a livestream with it! But for now it was fun to hack n slash tonight, and since I’m currently playing as 9S it’s more like hack n slash, and just hacking… I don’t mind playing as 9S, but the hacking games get really repetitive really quickly.

He’s Trying To Shave My Bushido

Another evening, another chapter finished! It’s starting to get a little tougher, but I finished the boss battle and only managed to die a couple times. This time I played on Desktop to enjoy some 4K Goodness. I did notice there is a small Nexus selection of mods for Trek to Yomi, might have to give a couple of them a go. Apparently this game has 3 different endings, so it might give me an excuse to spruce things up for a future replay.

I might have to give Chapter 3 a go tomorrow, might as well while I’m on a roll. I might actually be able to render the last bit of my SFM project tomorrow, and that’ll give me a bit of time to chill and do Samurai things. :v
